Brewers placed 1B Mat Gamel on the 15-day disabled list with a torn right ACL. Gamel blew out his knee after slamming into the right-field retaining wall while trying to track down a foul pop-up in San Diego. Though the Brewers have yet to officially rule him out for the season, it's almost certainly a season-ending injury. Travis Ishikawa is expected to receive the bulk of the time at first base.

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said that Mat Gamel has a torn ACL in his right knee that will likely require season-ending surgery. It's too bad, as Gamel was finally getting a chance to be an everyday player following Prince Fielder's departure. Though he was batting just .246/.293/.348 with one homer over his first 75 plate appearances, it's a notable blow to the Brewers, who have little depth at first base. They'll likely use Travis Ishikawa there for now, but we suspect that they'll look for help outside the organization.

Mat Gamel has told teammates that he needs surgery on his right knee. Terrible news for Gamel, who is hitting .246/.293/.348 with one homer, six RBI and a .641 OPS over 75 plate appearances this season. It's not clear how long he'll be sidelined, but Travis Ishikawa will step in on a temporary basis. Brooks Conrad is a candidate to be called up from the minors and there's a chance Corey Hart could also get a look.

Mat Gamel will return to Milwaukee on Wednesday to have his right knee examined by Dr. William Raasch. Gamel left Tuesday's game after slamming his right knee into the right-field retaining wall while trying to track down a foul pop-up in the first inning. No word yet on the severity, but that the Brewers are flying him all the way from San Diego suggests that there is some level of concern. Stay tuned.

Mat Gamel had X-rays Monday on his shoulder after a collision at home plate with Astros catcher Jason Castro. They turned up negative, but Gamel is not in the Brewers' lineup on Tuesday night because of general soreness related to the play. Travis Ishikawa is starting at first base and batting eighth against Houston.

Mat Gamel went 1-for-4 with his fifth RBI in Sunday's loss to the Rockies. Gamel has just four extra-base hits through his first 58 plate appearances, but is hitting a solid .278/.339/.407. Eligible at both first and third base, he should prove to be a mixed-league asset.

Mat Gamel is not in the lineup Thursday. It's his first day off of the season. Travis Ishikawa will start at first base against Aaron Harang.

Mat Gamel went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the Brewers 5-4 comeback win over the Dodgers on Tuesday. Gamel's solo shot off of Chad Billingsley was his first of the season and got the scoring started in the second inning. He also managed to pick up his third stolen base of the season and score three times in the game, including the winning run in the ninth. While Gamel has failed to live up to his massive hype in year's past, he's off to a strong start and appears secure as the Brewers starting first baseman.

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said Monday that he is leaning toward giving Mat Gamel a chance at first base if or when Prince Fielder signs elsewhere this winter. Melvin hasn't closed the door on Fielder completely, but it sure sounds like he has already made up his mind. "My gut feeling now is to give (Mat) Gamel a chance (at 1B)," said Melvin. Gamel, 26, batted .310/.372/.540 with 28 homers, 96 RBI and a .912 OPS over 545 plate appearances with Triple-A Nashville this season in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. The Brewers will likely give him a chance to sink or swim in 2012, but look for them to secure a right-handed hitter platoon partner this winter.

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said the team may consider giving the first base job to Mat Gamel if Prince Fielder leaves as a free agent. "Is this the time to give Mat Gamel a chance? That's something we have to seriously consider," said Melvin. Gamel batted .310 with 28 homers, 96 RBI and a .912 OPS for Triple-A Nashville this season. He hasn't fared well in his previous chances at the big league level, but he's also never been given an extended look. The 26-year-old would represent a cheap option at first base if the Brew Crew decide to spend money on upgrading the left side of their infield.
