Putkonen (elbow) was released by the Tigers on Wednesday, MLive.com's James Schmehl reports. Putkonen had been on Triple-A Toledo's disabled list after making just two appearances with the club following his late-April signing. It's not clear if he's still being bothered by the elbow issue or if the Tigers are simply releasing him to pursue another opportunity.

Putkonen has only managed two appearances this season, both with Triple-A Toledo, and has struggled mightily as he's allowed six runs over 1.2 innings. It's unclear exactly when he sustained the injury and there is currently no timetable available, though he's unlikely to make much of an impact with the big league club this season.

Tigers transferred RHP Luke Putkonen from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list. The move was made in order to clear room on the 40-man roster for the addition of Pat McCoy. Putkonen is out indefinitely after undergoing elbow surgery earlier this month.

Putkonen got two opinions last month that said he didn't need an operation, but he wound up having one as it turns out. He'll be re-evaluated after 6-8 weeks of rest and rehab before the Tigers determine a possible timetable for the right-hander.
