Medlen (elbow) signed a two-year contract with the Royals on Thursday that includes a mutual option for 2017. Medlen underwent his second Tommy John surgery in March and missed the entire 2014 season as a result, but he went 15-12 with a 3.11 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in his first full season as a starter in 2013. It's uncertain when Medlen will be ready to return, but he could wind up playing a significant role in the Royals' rotation during the second half of the season.

Although Medlen missed the entire 2014 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, he would have commanded at least $5.8 million in his third year of arbitration, a figure the Braves simply weren't comfortable with given the amount of time he's expected to miss in 2015. It's entirely possible the Braves will bring him back at a reduced price, as Mark Bowman of MLB.com reported earlier Tuesday that the two sides have discussed a two-year deal.

With the postseason coming to an end last week, all major league teams were forced to return their designated 60-day DL players to the 40-man roster.
