Medlen labored through his last two outings, allowing 10 earned runs in just 4.0 combined innings of work. It was later discovered that Medlen is dealing with inflammation in his right rotator cuff. The Royals added a pair of arms in Scott Alexander and Peter Moylan to take Medlen and Young's spots on the roster.

Medlen has struggled with his control throughout his first five appearances this season, and he now sits with 17 walks in 22.1 innings over five starts. Even with his control woes, Medlen has held his own in three of his first five starts this season, likely keeping him in the mix as a starter in the coming weeks. He'll face the Yankees on the road in his next turn Tuesday, before a second start May 15 against Atlanta.
