The Braves released Constanza on Friday, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Constanza appeared in 112 games for the Braves over the last four seasons, but his games played dipped each year and he played sparingly with the big club this spring, so the Braves decided to move on and give him a chance to play elsewhere.

Constanza was designated for assignment by the Braves on Wednesday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. For a third consecutive year, Constanza's name was included among the Braves' September callups in 2014, though he only saw four at-bats after the promotion. Constanza has plenty of speed and has shown an ability to get on base (.358 OBP) in parts of five seasons at Triple-A, but at 31, he's unlikely to ever be more than organizational filler.

It's comes as a nice, if expected, 31st birthday present for Constanza, who hit .293/.344/.324 with 30 steals in 111 games with Gwinnett. He packs little-to-no power, as evidenced by his seven home runs in 10 minor league seasons, but Constanza should see a few starts and opportunities as a pinch runner over the remainder of the regular season.
