De Leon (elbow) elected free agency Monday, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
De Leon had been removed from the Twins' 40-man roster and has decided to hit the free-agent market rather than accept an outright assignment. The right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery in July and will miss most, if not all, of the 2024 campaign.

De Leon (elbow) underwent successful season-ending Tommy John surgery Wednesday along with additional procedures on his arm, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Twins didn't go into detail on what the other procedures entailed, but De Leon was apparently diagnosed with more than a torn ligament in his right elbow after the team announced just under a month ago that he would require season-ending surgery. The Tommy John surgery is the second of De Leon's career, as he previously required the operation in 2018. In addition to missing the rest of the current season, the 30-year-old right-hander will most likely be sidelined for the entire 2024 campaign as well.

De Leon is set to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery after he underwent an MRI on Monday that revealed a torn ligament in his right elbow, Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
De Leon already underwent Tommy John surgery once back in 2018, and now he'll have to take another year-plus off as he recovers from his second procedure. He finishes 2023 with a 4.67 ERA and 1.21 WHIP through 17.1 frames and likely won't return until late in the 2024 season, if at all.

De Leon (elbow) told reporters after Saturday's game he will be placed on the 15-day injured list, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
De Leon will also undergo an MRI on his elbow, but he told reporters that he immediately knew there was something wrong and felt an "electric shock" while throwing a warm-up pitch. The Twins will likely place him on the injured list prior to Sunday's game against Detroit, and they'll announce a corresponding move to replace De Leon on the roster.

De Leon left Saturday's game versus Detroit with an apparent injury, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
De Leon picked up the injury while warming up, and immediately ran off the mound. The right-hander will likely undergo testing to determine the severity of the injury, but he should be considered day-to-day until there are more updates.

De Leon did not factor into the decision Saturday, pitching two scoreless innings against the Tigers while not allowing any hits or walks. He struck out two.
EDGE Analysis
De Leon opened the game for Minnesota and was highly-effective over his 2.1 innings of work, striking out two while not allowing a runner to reach base. He did basically all of his damage using his four-seamer and changeup and was part of a strong bullpen effort overall in shutting out the Tigers on the afternoon. The reliever had surrendered three runs over his last 2.1 innings coming in (over two appearances) but now holds a very solid 3.38 ERA on the season after Saturday's scoreless appearance.

De Leon will start Saturday's game against the Tigers in a bullpen game, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
EDGE Analysis
De Leon will likely be used as an opener and pitch an inning or two. De Leon has been a productive middle reliever for the Twins since coming up from Triple-A in mid-May with a 3.86 ERA and 15:4 K:BB ratio in 14 innings. Walks have been his flaw (7.9 BB/9 his prior three major league seasons), so his current 2.6 BB/9 is worth watching.

The Twins selected De Leon's contract from Triple-A St. Paul on Tuesday, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
De Leon last pitched in the majors in 2021 with the Reds, recording an 8.35 ERA and 1.80 WHIP through 18.1 frames. He's done much better this season in the minors (3.62 ERA, 1.37 WHIP) and will take the place of Jorge Alcala (forearm), who landed on the injured list Tuesday.
