Cueto (arm) threw 61 pitches over 4.2 innings in a minor-league game Friday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

If all goes well from this point forward, the veteran right-hander should be able to take the ball for the Marlins somewhere within the first week of the 2023 regular season.

More worrisome for the Marlins might be Cueto's performance so far this spring -- the 37-year-old got tagged for 11 runs in 3.2 innings over two starts before leaving camp for the WBC, and he wasn't much better in one start for the Dominican Republic, coughing up three runs over two innings in his only appearance. Cueto is still penciled into a spot in the Opening Day rotation, but if Miami determines he needs more time to round into shape, it could open the door for Braxton Garrett to get a start or two in April. Cueto is currently set to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, and if all goes well he could see game action as soon as Friday.

Where Cueto was experiencing the soreness isn't clear, but the hope is that he'll be ready to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, so it doesn't sound overly serious. If that happens, the veteran right-hander should be able to get in one more Grapefruit League start before the beginning of the regular season. Cueto is slated to open 2023 toward the back end of the Miami rotation.

Cueto has coughed up 11 earned runs in 3.2 innings through his first two Grapefruit League starts, allowing 11 hits and a walk while striking out two.

EDGE Analysis

The 37-year-old righty had a surprising bounce-back campaign with the White Sox in 2022 and parlayed it into a one-year, $6 million deal with the Marlins this winter that contains a team option for 2024. Cueto's early spring efforts are far from encouraging, but he'll get a chance to put them behind him while pitching for Team Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, and as yet his spot in the Opening Day rotation for Miami doesn't seem to be in jeopardy.

Cueto signed a one-year, $6 million contract with a $10.5 million club option for 2024 with the Marlins on Tuesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

The buyout on the option is $2.5 million, so Cueto is guaranteed at least $8.5 million in the deal. It's a move that adds depth to a Marlins rotation which already had lots of it, so it would make sense if the team flipped at least one starter for lineup help. Cueto is coming off a nice 2022 campaign with the White Sox that saw him post a 3.35 ERA with 102 strikeouts across 158.1 innings. His fantasy appeal is limited to deeper formats.

Cueto (8-10) earned the win Monday, allowing two runs on six hits and no walks with four punchouts over seven innings against Minnesota.

EDGE Analysis

Cueto was effective through seven innings, the only damage coming via two-run home run off the bat of Gio Urshela in the top of the first inning. The quality start was a great end to the season, as Cueto earned a 6.34 ERA over 32.2 innings in six starts leading up to Monday. The 36-year-old veteran finishes the season with a 3.35 ERA, eight wins, 18 quality starts and 102 strikeouts over 158.1 innings.

Cueto (7-10) took the loss Wednesday, allowing six runs on 10 hits and one walk over 5.2 innings against the Twins. He struck out seven.

EDGE Analysis

Cueto's difficult night included walking in a run, multiple RBI singles and a two-run double off the bat of Matt Wallner. The righty has allowed five earned runs or more in three of his last six starts. In addition, the 36-year-old has surrendered at least eight hits in six of his past 12 outings.

Cueto (7-9) took the loss against Cleveland on Thursday, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits and one walk while striking out three batters over six innings.

EDGE Analysis

Cueto had been dealing with an illness and hadn't pitched since Sept. 11, but he was able to go six innings and throw 91 pitches Thursday. While it was a positive that he appeared to be healthy, the veteran hurler received little run support and took his third straight loss, though he's tossed a quality start in two of those defeats. Despite a 7-9 record, Cueto has pitched pretty well this season, posting a 3.15 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over 145.2 innings.

Cueto (illness) is listed as the White Sox's scheduled starting pitcher for Thursday's home game against the Guardians, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.

EDGE Analysis

Cueto was unable to take the hill this past Saturday against the Tigers after experiencing bouts of dizziness while he dealt with an illness, but he looks like he'l be ready to go the next time his turn in the rotation comes up. The veteran right-hander owns a 3.43 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 6.9 K-BB% over 65.2 innings in his 10 starts since the All-Star break.
