Holdzkom was placed on the DL with an undisclosed injury, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Holdzkom signed with the White Sox and was assigned to Triple-A Charlotte earlier in the day, but the exact nature of the ailment is unclear at this point. The 28-year-old posted a 3.22 ERA at the Triple-A level last season and will serve as organizational depth in the bullpen when healthy.

Holdzkom will sign with the White Sox, Robert Murray of Baseball Essential reports.
EDGE Analysis
Holdzkom will likely be signed to a minor league contract after being released by Pittsburgh last Monday. After an impressive run with the Pirates in 2014, the 28-year-old battled injury last season while posting a 3.22 ERA at Triple-A Indianapolis.

Holdzkom was released by the Pirates on Monday, Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Pirates could not find a taker for Holdzkom after designating him for assignment in early April, so they ultimately decided to give him his release. Now a free agent, Holdzkom could hook on with a team hoping he can regain the form he showed late in the 2014 season, when he struck out 14 batters over nine innings in nine outings with the Pirates.

The Pirates designated Holdzkom for assignment Sunday, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
EDGE Analysis
An unsung hero of the Pirates' run to the postseason in 2014, Holdzkom has fallen off the radar since then, as he languished in an injury-abbreviated season at Triple-A Indianapolis in 2015. The big right-hander didn't show enough improvement with his command during the spring, and now that he's entering his age-28 season, the Pirates were running out of patience with his quest to return to form. Another team could take a gamble on him through the waiver market, but if not, he'll likely stick in the organization as bullpen depth at Triple-A.

Pittsburgh reassigned Holdzkom to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday. "John is in an interesting situation where the ball is not coming out of his hand the way it has in the past especially his last couple of outings," GM Neal Huntington told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
EDGE Analysis
Holdzkom's velocity has dropped from the 96-98 mph to 89-91 mph over the last couple seasons, something which throws up a potential injury red-flag. The towering righty helped the Pirates in September of 2014 but struggled for most of 2015. His big-league window may be closing.

The Indianapolis Indians placed Holdzkom on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. After a rough start to 2015, Holdzkom had allowed runs in just two of his last 13 outings. The lanky righty remains in the mix for a recall as he regains his health. For the season, Holdzkom holds a 3.38 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 27:15 K:BB ratio in 21.1 Triple-A innings.

Holdzkom (shoulder) has not been pitching for Triple-A Indianapolis due to "shoulder fatigue," Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. Holdzkom has struggled this season, carrying a 5.56 ERA across 11.1 innings with a 2.12 WHIP. His control has been particularly problematic, walking 13 batters in that time span. After a strong season last year where he rapidly rose through the team's ranks, Holdzkom will look to bounce back upon his return.

Holdzkom has been optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis, Jon Morosi of FOX Sports reports. Holdzkom had an excellent spring, but he was the only back-end bullpen candidate with minor-league options still remaining. It shouldn't be too long before we see Holdzkom with the big club.

Holdzkom isn't a lock to make the team out of camp, primarily because he has options remaining while several other pitching candidates do not, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. Prospective bullpen members Arquimedes Caminero and Stolmy Pimentel are out of options, as is Jeff Locke. "One or two (bullpen spots) are open," Pirates GM Neal Huntington said. "We love what John is doing, but we have a handful of other guys who are throwing the ball well. We're going to have some interesting decisions with the (final bench spot) and the bullpen." Holdzkom has thrown four shutout innings thus far in spring training.

Holdzkom doesn't expect to add a second pitch to his primary usage of a four-seam fastball in 2015, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. The 6-foot-9 righty (with a 96.7 mph average fastball) threw his favorite pitch 94 percent of the time, with a palm ball accounting for the other six percent. "I'm just going to ride out the heater and see what happens. That's all I've got right now," Holdzkom said. "If it's located well I can probably have some pretty good results." Holdzkom came out of Independent League ball to help Pittsburgh down the stretch and could surprise as a late-inning reliever should injuries strike the bullpen.
