Shields(1-4) finally notched his first win Monday, beating the Rockies 2-1 with six innings of one-run ball. He gave up nine hits while walking two and striking out five.
EDGE Analysis
Shields had been the subject of some tough-luck losses early on, but Matt Kemp's two-run double in the opening frame was all he needed to secure his first victory. The veteran has given up exactly one run in each of his last two outings, and will have the luxury of once again pitching in the pitcher-friendly confines of Petco Park for his next scheduled start Saturday against the Mets.

Despite tossing his best game of 2016, Shields (0-4) walked away with the loss in Tuesday's 1-0 game against the Giants. He allowed a run on three hits while walking four and striking out two.
EDGE Analysis
Run support was a major concern when Shields decided to move to San Diego last season, but the Padres wound up providing him the 10th-best support in the league (5.06 runs per game). This year, however, it appears that the initial concerns on 2015 are coming true. Shields ranks last (102nd) in run support (1.20 runs per start) through five starts, and his fantasy value is taking a major blow because of it. Even with four quality starts in five outings, Shields is now off to the worst start of his MLB career.

Shields pitched well, allowing three runs on five hits over six innings, but it wasn't enough as the Padres fell 11-1 against the Pirates on Thursday. He also had five strikeouts and two walks.
EDGE Analysis
After six complete innings, Shields left with just a 3-0 deficit, but the Pirates tagged the Padres bullpen for eight runs in the seventh. San Diego has done a better job of scoring lately, but with the Padres' offense and bullpen, wins could be hard to come by this summer for Shields. His next start is scheduled to be Tuesday versus the Giants.

Shields didn't factor into the decision against Arizona on Friday, as he allowed two runs on six hits while striking out six and walking four over seven innings.
EDGE Analysis
The right-hander has fallen victim to the long ball and walks early this season, and it nearly cost him again Friday. Shields allowed a solo home run in the second inning, the fourth bomb he's tossed up in the last two starts, and three walks in his final four frames. He has just a 2.0 BB/K ratio through three starts.

Shields was handed his second straight loss Sunday versus the Rockies, allowing four runs on six hits and a pair of walks in seven innings. He struck out two.
EDGE Analysis
Shields was able to limit the damage against a red hot Colorado lineup at Coors Field, but the Padres offense couldn't scrape up enough runs to give him a chance at a win. Shields has been solid, if unspectacular through 13 innings, and San Diego will hope he can reestablish some value after a pedestrian 2015 season.

Shields will start Sunday's game against the Rockies, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Padres placed Sunday's original starter, Tyson Ross, on the DL on Saturday, so Shields will move up a day and throw in the series finale. The Padres have not revealed how they'll handle the rotation in Ross' absence beyond Sunday, however.

Shields will open the season as the Padres' No. 2 starter.
EDGE Analysis
San Diego announced the top three in its rotation Friday, and it'll be Tyson Ross as the Opening Day starter, followed by Shields and Andrew Cashner. Shields ERA slipped a bit in 2015 (3.91) but he's still among the most dependable pitchers in all of baseball, making at least 31 starts in each of the last nine seasons.

Shields will not make his scheduled start Sunday, the Union-Tribune's Dennis Lin reports.
EDGE Analysis
He is not injured, but the Padres want to evaluate some of their other pitchers, so it will be a bullpen day. Shields can now be dropped in single-season leagues. It is unclear who will take the ball Sunday, but it will be difficult to peg which Padres reliever could be in position to qualify for a win.

Shields (13-6) held the Rockies to four runs over 6.2 innings in Sunday's win. He struck out eight batters and walked four.
EDGE Analysis
Shields' run total probably doesn't reflect how strong he looked in the outing, as he yielded only two hits, one of which was a leadoff homer to Charlie Blackmon. The right-hander has reeled off four straight wins, but he's mostly been the beneficiary of strong run support. The Padres have scored at least nine runs in each of those victories.

Shields improve to 12-6 Monday against Arizona as he allowed one run on four hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out six.
EDGE Analysis
Shields mustered his first quality start in his last three outings. After walking at least four batters in three of his last four starts, Shields dialed in his control this outing, as he threw 16 first pitch strikes to 27 batters and threw 63 percent strikes. His ERA is down to 3.80.
