Kennedy signed a one-year, $4.75 million contract with the Diamondbacks on Sunday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Kennedy pitched for the Diamondbacks from 2010 to 2013, and he'll return to the organization after spending time with Texas and Philadelphia last year. The right-hander operated in a high-leverage role in 2021 and converted 26 of 30 save chances while posting a 3.20 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 56.1 innings across 55 appearances between his two clubs. Kennedy will likely have a setup role early in the 2022 season after Arizona signed Mark Melancon during the offseason.

Kennedy (2-1) picked up a win after blowing a save against the Cubs on Monday. He surrendered one run on one hit while striking out two in one inning.
EDGE Analysis
The closer gave up a game-tying home run to Matt Duffy in the top of the ninth before the Phillies walked it off in the bottom of the inning. Kennedy has now blown consecutive save opportunities and three of his last five while posting a 7.05 ERA over his last 7.2 innings. If the team were to make a change at the back-end of the bullpen, Hector Neris or Jose Alvarado would be candidates to take over at closer.

Kennedy (1-1) was charged with the blown save and the loss Thursday against the Rockies. He allowed three runs on four hits while striking out one batter in two-thirds of an inning.
EDGE Analysis
After retiring the first two batters he faced, Kennedy allowed a single to Colton Welker and then served up back-to-back homers to Ryan McMahon and Sam Hilliard. Manager Joe Girardi gave his closer a vote of confidence. "We look at it everyday, but he's our closer," Girardi told Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer after the game. "He's had some big saves for us and tough saves for us. Tonight, he was one strike away. I don't think he's not capable of doing it because I've seen him do it. He just didn't do it tonight."

Kennedy (1-0) earned the win in relief Sunday against the Marlins after tossing two scoreless innings, striking out four.
EDGE Analysis
Kennedy was initially tasked with pitching the ninth and keeping the Phillies alive in the game, but he only needed 11 pitches to get the job done there. He also slammed the door in the 10th, fanning the final two batters he faced while holding a one-run lead and a runner on third. The veteran reliever has not allowed runs in eight of his last nine outings and remains a dependable late-inning arm for Philadelphia, going 22-for-24 in save chances thus far while sporting a 3.18 ERA in the process.
