Iwakuma (shoulder) could begin playing catch this weekend in the next step in his rehab, Bob Dutton of The News Tribune reports.

The veteran right-hander is sidelined with right shoulder inflammation, but it's apparently subsiding to the point where a return to light throwing appears imminent. Iwakuma's recovery timetable still points to a mid-June return at the earliest.

Iwakuma will be out 4-to-6 weeks with right shoulder inflammation, MLB.com's Greg Johns reports.

He underwent an MRI earlier in the week, and the inflammation was deemed serious enough that he can be ruled out until at least mid June. Four of the Mariners' top five starters are on the disabled list, so stand-ins Chase De Jong, Christian Bergman, Dillon Overton and Ariel Miranda will likely remain in the rotation for now.

Iwakuma will return to Seattle to undergo an MRI on his shoulder, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports.

Apparently the discomfort in Iwakuma's shoulder has been gradually increasing, and it wasn't responding to treatment, so a DL stint was deemed necessary. He's also dealing with swelling in his knee after being struck by a line drive his last time out. With the DL move backdated to May 7, Iwakuma will be eligible for activation as soon as May 17, but his status for a return won't be known until his undergoes a full evaluation.

Iwakuma (knee, shoulder) was placed on the 10-day DL on Wednesday, retroactive to May 4.

Iwakuma's start this week had been pushed back due to a bout of knee soreness, but shoulder inflammation was what led to his placement on the DL. It's uncertain how much more time he will need, but with the backdated stint, Iwakuma will be eligible to return as soon as May 14. The Mariners did not immediately name a replacement for Thursday.

Iwakuma had been scheduled to start Tuesday against the Phillies, but the team will instead give the ball to Ariel Miranda for that start, who will be followed by Yovani Gallardo in the rotation. Iwakuma was a victim of a comebacker to the knee his last time out, and although it originally wasn't expected to cost him time, it will at least force a rotation reshuffle in the short term. The right-hander will get more time to rest any adverse affects of Wednesday's ailment before being reevaluated.

Iwakuma is still experiencing left knee soreness, and his scheduled start Tuesday is in jeopardy, the Tacoma News Tribune's Bob Dutton reports.

Earlier in the week it seemed that Iwakuma would have no problem making his next start, despite taking a comebacker off his knee in Wednesday's outing. However, he has not progressed as the Mariners had hoped, so that is less certain as of Saturday. With James Paxton (forearm strain) already ruled out for at least two starts, and Felix Hernandez (shoulder) and Drew Smyly (elbow) on the DL, the Mariners are stretched incredibly thin. Dillon Overton is expected to start for Paxton on Sunday, and Christian Bergman and Rob Whalen would be options to start Tuesday if Iwakuma can't go.

Mariners manager Scott Servais believes Iwakuma will be ready to make his next start, despite taking a comebacker off his left knee Wednesday, MLB.com's Greg Johns reports.

Iwakuma took a hard line drive on the knee in the fifth inning Wednesday, and although he escaped that frame and came out for the sixth, he was lifted after allowing three straight hits. "I don't know if it was my knee, but my pitches were up in the zone, and they got to some of them," Iwakuma said. The team will examine the knee Thursday, and will have a better idea of Iwakuma's availability for next Tuesday based on how it responds. Both Iwakuma and Servais are optimistic the ailment won't cost him that start.

Iwakuma (0-2) gave up three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four over five-plus innings but came away with a no-decision in Wednesday's 8-7 win over the Angels.

EDGE Analysis

The veteran righty held Los Angeles scoreless through five innings, but then served up a double, a home run and a single without recording an out in the sixth before getting the hook. Iwakuma's 4.35 ERA and 1.26 WHIP through six starts aren't terrible, but he has yet to pitch past the sixth inning and Seattle will have to be very careful with his workload going forward as he seems unable to give them any length at this stage of his career. The 35-year-old will next take the mound Tuesday in Philadelphia.

Iwakuma allowed one unearned run on three hits and a walk while striking out three batters during Thursday's win over Detroit. He did not factor into the decision.

EDGE Analysis

The veteran entered with an underwhelming 5.31 ERA and 7.77 FIP through his first four starts of the season, so this was a welcomed bounce-back outing. Still, Iwakuma has shown statistical regression in three consecutive seasons, and it hasn't been a great start to 2017. He'll look to build on Thursday's showing against the Angels in his next start.

Iwakuma (0-2) gave up three earned runs on five hits and four walks over 5.1 innings in Friday's 3-1 loss to the Athletics. He struck out three.

EDGE Analysis

Iwakuma seemed to get progressively worse as spring training wound down, giving up 10 earned runs over three of his last four exhibition starts. Many of those problems have now crept into the regular season, with Friday's outing being the latest example. Although the veteran right-hander wasn't shelled by any means, he did surrender a pair of home runs to Trevor Plouffe and Yonder Alonso in back-to-back innings, while throwing 84 pitches, only 44 of which found the strike zone. Iwakuma also issued multiple free passes for the third time in four trips to the mound this season, and has now yielded nine earned runs on 12 hits -- including three homers -- and four walks over the 8.1 innings encompassing his last two starts. He'll look to straighten things out in a Wednesday road start versus the Tigers.
