Manager Bruce Bochy said that the veteran pitcher will be used in the seventh inning of games, a larger role than he has assumed for the Giants in the past. The right-hander has fairly even career splits against both righties and lefties, making him an unconventional option to replace the injured Will Smith (elbow) as the club's "left-handed" setup man. Kontos excelled in his first test, setting down David Peralta, Paul Goldschmidt and Jake Lamb in a clean inning Tuesday. The increased role should result in a slight uptick in hold opportunities.

The Giants brought Kontos back on a one-year deal to serve as a middle reliever in 2017. He has posted ERAs of 2.33 and 2.53 in 2015 and 2016 respectively, but his strikeout rate has been under 6.0 K/9 in both seasons, which isn't desirable for a ratio-boosting middle reliever in even deep formats.

The five-year vet now boasts a 2.86 ERA along with 20 strikeouts over 28.1 innings pitched this season. However, the return of Sergio Romo (forearm) has booted Kontos from his set-up role and Kontos is unlikely to see any spontaneous save opportunities in the near future.
