Kontos was charged with an earned run and a blown save in a third of an inning against the Dodgers on Friday.
EDGE Analysis
The month of July has not been kind to the veteran reliever, as he has posted a 7.36 ERA in 12 appearances, inflating his season ERA by a whole run (3.83) in the process. On the bright side, Kontos has maintained his career-best 9.7 K/9, but he has simply been too hittable (1.32 WHIP) to be relied upon as a fantasy option.

Kontos fired a scoreless inning while striking out one in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Rockies.
EDGE Analysis
The 32-year-old has been one of the few bright spots in an underperforming Giants bullpen this season, carrying a 2.82 ERA through 36 appearances. With Mark Melancon (elbow) on the disabled list again, Kontos should see an increased number of high-leverage situations, putting him in the conversation in holds leagues.

Kontos fire 1.1 scoreless innings Sunday, striking out three in a loss to the Rockies.
EDGE Analysis
With a 10.1 K/9 through 33.0 innings, the 32-year-old is showing a side of him that we hadn't seen for years. Kontos' increased strikeouts seem to be coming at the expense of his ability to keep the ball in the yard (1.4 HR/9). While his 3.27 ERA isn't too appealing for an arm that doesn't see saves, there is a good chance Kontos can build on his current total of two holds while Hunter Strickland serves his six-game suspension.

Kontos pitched two innings of relief Wednesday, holding the Nationals scoreless in a 3-1 loss.
EDGE Analysis
After a disastrous month of April, the veteran reliever has returned to form in May, posting a 1.93 ERA and 8.4 K/9 over 14 innings. Kontos could see an influx in hold opportunities once Hunter Strickland is forced to serve his multi-game suspension.

Kontos has allowed four runs over eight innings of relief to begin the season entering Sunday's game against the Padres.
EDGE Analysis
Kontos has allowed runs in only two of his 11 appearances, with eight runs and four strikeouts. The 31-year-old usually enters the game in the later innings, and so far, there is no reason to believe Kontos will not continue to appear in those higher-leverage situations.

Kontos will be used in later innings against lefty-heavy portions of opponents' lineups, CSN Bay Area reports.
EDGE Analysis
Manager Bruce Bochy said that the veteran pitcher will be used in the seventh inning of games, a larger role than he has assumed for the Giants in the past. The right-hander has fairly even career splits against both righties and lefties, making him an unconventional option to replace the injured Will Smith (elbow) as the club's "left-handed" setup man. Kontos excelled in his first test, setting down David Peralta, Paul Goldschmidt and Jake Lamb in a clean inning Tuesday. The increased role should result in a slight uptick in hold opportunities.

Kontos pitched a clean sixth inning and picked up the win in Saturday's spring training win over the Cubs.
EDGE Analysis
The Giants brought Kontos back on a one-year deal to serve as a middle reliever in 2017. He has posted ERAs of 2.33 and 2.53 in 2015 and 2016 respectively, but his strikeout rate has been under 6.0 K/9 in both seasons, which isn't desirable for a ratio-boosting middle reliever in even deep formats.

Kontos agreed to a one-year deal with the Giants on Friday, avoiding arbitration.
EDGE Analysis
The terms of the agreement were not announced. He figures to pitch in middle relief this season for the Giants and won't offer much fantasy value.

Kontos tossed three clean innings in Friday's 5-2 loss to the Orioles. He walked two and struck out one.
EDGE Analysis
Kontos was called upon in a long relief role after starter Matt Cain could only go four innings Friday. He has been stellar in a middle relief role for the Giants this season (2.11 ERA), so it was surprising that manager Bruce Bochy let him go for three innings (39 pitches). While the ERA is a nice surprise, Kontos doesn't strike out enough batters to be relevant in most formats.

Kontos has given up just three earned runs and two walks over his last 11 relief appearances.
EDGE Analysis
The five-year vet now boasts a 2.86 ERA along with 20 strikeouts over 28.1 innings pitched this season. However, the return of Sergio Romo (forearm) has booted Kontos from his set-up role and Kontos is unlikely to see any spontaneous save opportunities in the near future.
