Garces signed a minor league contract with the Marlins that includes an invite to spring training, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Marlins need left-handed relief depth, and they have addressed that by signing Garces, along with two other unheralded southpaws, to a minor league deal. If he makes the team out of spring training he will work predominantly in low-leverage situations.

Garces has been moved to a starting role at Triple-A El Paso, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
After struggling to keep his ERA below 4.00 while pitching from the bullpen for much of the season, Garces has seen his game improve since being used as a starter. He's had four starts since the change, three of which were respectable performances, as he gave up just four runs across 16.2 innings of work. However, his most recent start on June 7 was a different story, as he gave up five earned runs in just four innings.

Garces signed a minor league contract with the Padres that includes an invite to major league spring training.
EDGE Analysis
Garces spent the past two seasons with the Padres working as one of their few big league-ready left-handed relievers. He regressed to a 5.21 ERA last season and also posted a 1.658 WHIP while striking out only 30 batters against 22 walks over 38.0 innings. The fact that he's a left-handed reliever will help his odds of making the Opening Day roster, but he'll need to dial in his command and cut down on walks to earn a spot in the Padres bullpen.

The Padres declined to tender Garces a contract for 2016.
EDGE Analysis
He struggled to a 5.21 ERA and 1.68 WHIP last season while working primarily as a lefty specialist out of the San Diego bullpen. Walks were a major issue -- he issued 22 in 38 innings -- and he will need to rein it in to have any chance to break camp with a major-league team.

Garces was recalled from Triple-A El Paso on Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
Look for Garces to once again serve in a low-leverage role in his fourth stint with the major league club this season. Of the 34 appearances Garces has made with San Diego this year, just 10 have come in games won by the Padres, and he still doesn't have a hold.

Garces has been recalled from Triple-A El Paso Garces got the call up after starter Brandon Morrow (shoulder) hit the disabled list, which will move Odrisamer Despaigne from the bullpen into the rotation in all likelihood. With fellow reliever Shawn Kelley nearing a return from a DL stint, Garces may only be up with the team temporarily. However, Garces will provide left handed depth in the bullpen.

Garces is the only remaining left-handed reliever in the Padres' camp after Chris Rearick was reassigned to minor league camp Thursday. Garces became the favorite to be the Padres' lefty specialist when they dealt Alex Torres to the Mets earlier in the week. With Rearick gone, Garces is a near lock to be the southpaw presence in what is a predominantly right-handed bullpen.
