After normally reliable David Purcey was tagged for four runs in an inning of work, Tigers manager Jim Leyland tapped outfielder Don Kelly to pitch in relief.
Kelly had not pitched since college, but still managed to go 2-2 on Mets hitter Scott Hairston before inducing him into a harmless fly out to center field. His fastball was clocked at a solid 86 MPH. Although we don't anticipate seeing him on the mound again, Kelly can take pride in being the only Tigers pitcher (out of eight) in the first two games of their series to keep the Mets hitless.
