McGehee signed a one-year deal with Japan's Yomiuri Giants on Saturday, Ken Rosenthal of MLB Network reports.

McGehee became a free agent in November and after a month of evaluating his options, the third basemen decided to play professional baseball in Japan. The 34-year-old batted .198 and .227 respectively over the past two major league seasons and so would likely not be a valuable fantasy asset even if he remained in the MLB.

McGehee was not extended a qualifying offer and is now a free agent, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports.

This comes as no surprise, as the veteran third baseman barely contributed at the major league level. McGehee will head into free agency and likely look to latch onto an organization willing to keep him around on a minor league contract.

Since Nick Castellanos (hand) landed on the DL last Sunday, McGehee has stepped in to start all seven of the Tigers' games at third base. Even so, the prospect of regular playing time during Castellanos' absence at least makes McGehee worth a look in AL-only formats.
