While Rodon's season ERA sits at a mediocre 3.56, that's largely due to the blowup outing against Baltimore. After shutting out Baltimore through the first two innings, Rodon allowed three solo home runs between the third and fourth innings before the O's put up a four spot in the fifth, forcing the Yankees to turn to the bullpen. Rodon surrendered 15 long balls in 14 starts last season but has a 0.8 HR/9 through six outings in 2024. It's been an encouraging start to the campaign with a 2.48 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 30:14 K:BB across 32.2 innings.

The continued control issues that resulted in his fifth consecutive start with multiple walks was the only negative in what served as a rebound for Rodon, who lasted only four innings during his last start against Toronto. The 31-year-old lefty will carry a 2.70 ERA and 1.35 WHIP into his next start, tentatively slated to take place over the weekend in Milwaukee.

On a positive note, Rodon has held his opponents to two or fewer runs in each of those outings.

Rodon coughed up a run in the first inning but was able to avoid danger throughout the rest of his start, including a third-inning jam when he punched out Jose Abreu and Chas McCormick to strand a pair of runners. After posting a brutal 6.85 ERA in 2023, Rodon looked shaky at times Friday but generally kept the game under control. He forced 11 whiffs and the fastball touched 98 mph. The 31-year-old southpaw is currently in line to start in Arizona next week.

Rodon pitched 19.1 innings over five starts in Grapefruit League action, posting a 4.19 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB.

EDGE Analysis

Rodon made just one appearance last spring before suffering a forearm injury that significantly cut down his season, so the fact that he made it through the exhibition slate without any health issues this spring is a positive development. Per Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, Rodon dropped weight in the offseason and looked to be in better shape in camp as he aims to put last year's injury-plagued and largely forgettable performance in the rearview mirror. While the southpaw's spring stats weren't overwhelming, Kuty reports that Rodon's fastball sat in the mid-90s, which is in line with where it has been during recent campaigns. The Yankees may need Rodon to step up as the team's ace with Gerrit Cole likely out for at least the first two months of the regular season due to an elbow injury.

Rodon's first start of the spring was promising, as he got more than half of his outs via punchout and gave up just one run (on a homer by Alejandro Kirk). Rodon's first season in New York was a disaster, as he posted a 6.85 ERA and 1.45 WHIP while battling injuries and totaling just 64.1 innings, but he appears healthy entering Grapefruit League competition and could be poised for a bounce-back campaign. He's a high-risk, high-reward target in fantasy drafts, as he struck out 237 batters as recently as 2022 but has reached 150 innings just three times over nine major-league seasons.
