Carlyle notched the save, retiring the final two hitters, in the Mets' 3-1 Opening Day win over the Nationals. Carlyle was used after Jeurys Familia pitched the eighth and Jenrry Mejia was unavailable for the ninth due to elbow soreness. Carlyle barely made the team out of spring training but came up big Monday.

Carlyle has made the Met's Opening Day roster as a third lefty in the bullpen, the Newark Star-Ledger reports. At age 36, Carlyle turned in the best big league season of his career last year, pitching to a 1.45 ERA over 31 innings the Mets. He may not be used in many high-leverage situations, however.

The Mets have signed Carlyle to a minor-league deal, which includes an invitation to spring training. In 27 games with the Mets, Carlyle posted a 1.45 ERA with a 28:5 K:BB ratio in 31 innings. He will get a chance to earn a role as the second lefty out of the team's bullpen.

Carlyle was outrighted off the 40-man roster Friday and has elected to become a free agent, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports. Carlyle refused his assignment to Triple-A Las Vegas and instead will be able to shop his services in free agency.

Carlyle allowed a run on three hits with three strikeouts Sunday against the Dodgers. Carlyle has appeared in 10 games since getting called back on July 26, allowing two runs on 10 hits and a walk with 14 strikeouts in 13.1 innings. he is usually used in mop-up situations; a role he likely will fill the remainder of the season, especially with the rosters expanding September 1.
