Roberts announced his retirement Friday, the Baltimore Sun reports. A two-time All-Star, Roberts hit just .237/.300/.360 in 91 games with the Yankees this season, and ultimately decided that he just could no longer play at the level he demanded of himself. Roberts, now 37, was drafted by the Orioles with a supplemental first-round pick in 1999 and was in the major leagues within two years, but injuries limited him to 192 games over his final four seasons in Baltimore.

Roberts was granted his unconditional release from the Yankees on Saturday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. The Yankees were unable to find a willing trade partner to acquire Roberts after the team DFA'd him last week, and with the veteran infielder uninterested in accepting a minor league assignment, he'll cut ties entirely with the organization. Given Roberts' age, health concerns and middling production with the Yankees this season, he may have difficulty finding another major league opportunity this season.

Brian Roberts belted a solo homer, his fifth of the season, in a losing effort against the Orioles on Friday. The second inning blast off Miguel Gonzalez was of the solo variety and gave the Yankees an early 1-0 lead. He has managed to stay relatively healthy this season, hitting .246/.313/.384 with five homers and 20 RBI in his 276 at-bats.

Brian Roberts went 4-for-5 with three doubles and two runs scored as the Yankees' No. 2 hitter in Friday's 6-5 win over the Twins. It was Roberts' fourth career three-double game and first since 2009. He was hitting second in Derek Jeter's place for just the fourth time this year. He'll likely head back down to the seventh or eighth spot tomorrow when Jeter rejoins the lineup.

Brian Roberts went 2-for-5 and hit a game-tying homer in the bottom of the ninth Monday versus the Rays. Roberts' homer off Joel Peralta sent the game into extra innings. It was a rather rare offensive highlight for Roberts recently. He ended up hitting .215 with two homers and six RBI in 79 at-bats during June.

Brian Roberts went 2-for-4 with a double and a two-run home run in Tuesday's loss to the Blue Jays. Roberts homered in the seventh inning, cutting the Blue Jays' lead to 6-3. The Yankees would eventually tie the game later in the inning. Now with three homers and 16 RBI, Roberts is slashing .244/.324/.359 along with seven stolen bases on the year.

Brian Roberts collected his 1500th career hit when he singled in the second inning against the Orioles. Fittingly, Roberts achieved this milestone against his former ballclub. He's the 600th player to reach the 1500 mark. After the hit, he promptly stole second. Age and injuries have eaten away at Roberts' productivity (.234/.320/.333), but he was a rock solid second baseman for Baltimore in the mid-2000's and it's a nice career marker.

Brian Roberts went 1-for-3 with an RBI single and a walk Friday night against the Royals. It was his first RBI since May 26. Roberts has stayed healthy for the most part this season, but he has done next to nothing at the plate, putting up a modest .236/.309/.345 batting line over 53 games.

Brian Roberts went 2-for-5 and had the go-ahead RBI single in the 12th inning of Monday's win over the Cardinals. Roberts was the only Yankee to have two hits on the day, as the Bombers managed to pull out the victory even though they failed to have a single extra-base knock over 12 frames. The Yankees second baseman is sporting a .241/.311/.359 batting line this season.

Brian Roberts (knee) went 1-for-2 with a homer and two runs scored in Sunday's defeat of the White Sox. Roberts missed Saturday's game after fouling a ball off his right knee on Friday night. X-rays came back negative and he should be fully active all this week. The veteran second baseman is hitting .236/.308/.357 with two homers and 10 RBI in 42 games this season.
