The Mets assigned Caminero to their minor-league camp Tuesday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

With 149 career major-league appearances, Caminero was one of the more seasoned relievers vying for a bullpen gig at big-league camp. After spending the past two seasons in Japan before inking a minor-league deal with the Mets over the winter, Caminero struggled to make an impression this spring. He was lit up for seven runs (six earned) on six hits and two walks over 3.1 innings across four appearances.

Caminero signed a minor-league contract with the Mets on Thursday, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.

Caminero spent the past two seasons in Japan, compiling a 3.18 ERA and 84:29 K:BB across 82 innings of relief. The veteran right-hander last pitched in the majors in 2016, when he posted a combined 3.56 ERA and 50:33 K:BB in 60.2 innings with the Pirates and Mariners. He'll compete for a middle relief role in spring training.

The Mariners granted Caminero his release Friday to allow him to pursue an opportunity in Japan.

Caminero throws gas but hasn't been able to put the ball in the strike zone with consistency in four major league seasons. The right-hander made 57 appearances between Pittsburgh and Seattle in 2016, posting a 50:33 K:BB over 60. 2 innings. He turns 30 in June.

Caminero allowed four runs (one earned), four hits and a walk in two-thirds of the ninth inning Friday to turn a rout into a close game that forced the Mariners to use two more pitchers, including closer Edwin Diaz.

EDGE Analysis

In Caminero's defense, he should have been out of the inning with only one run scoring -- and that came on a double-play -- but an error kept the inning alive. He then gave up a double, single and walk and was yanked. Two more runs scored after he left. Caminero throws in the high-90s and touches 100 mph, but lately he has not been reliable. In his last nine outings (8.2 innings), he's allowed 17 hits, 13 runs, four walks (one intentional) and two homers with six strikeouts.

Caminero was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on Monday, Shannon Drayer of MYNorthwest.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

Caminero is officially on Seattle's 25-man roster as Taijuan Walker was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma in a corresponding move. Caminero owns a respectable 3.51 ERA this season, but has struggled to keep the opposition off base as his WHIP and opponent batting average sit at 1.66 and .289, respectively.

Caminero was traded to the Mariners on Saturday for a player to be named.

EDGE Analysis

After struggling with command early on in the season, Caminero has turned in some solid relief appearances since the start of July, compiling a 2.77 ERA and 0.85 WHIP over his last 13 innings for the Pirates. The 29-year-old right hander will now join Seattle and look to bolster their bullpen as the team begins the playoff push.

Caminero struck out four batters in two scoreless innings Friday against the A's.

EDGE Analysis

Since returning from the DL on June 11, Caminero has posted a 1.42 ERA with an 11:6 K:BB in 12.2 innings. He's still slotted as a middle-innings reliever, but the improvement he's shown has likely saved his spot in the bullpen.

Caminero (quadriceps) was activated from the 15-day disabled list Saturday, Travis Sawchick of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

EDGE Analysis

After some struggles in his first rehab outing, Caminero settled down and tossed three scoreless frames in the following two appearances. The 28-year-old reliever has done enough for the Pirates to deem him healthy, and he will retake his spot in the bullpen as a result. The club sent Kyle Lobstein and Cole Figueroa to the minors in corresponding moves to open up a spot on the 25-man roster for both Caminero and Rob Scahill.

Caminero (quadriceps) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday.

EDGE Analysis

The Pirates placed Caminero on the DL last week with a left quad strain, but in light of his progress, he appears on track to return when first eligible or shortly thereafter. Caminero throws his fastball in the upper-90s, but he hasn't had a clue where it's going this season, with his walk rate ballooning to nearly 15 percent.
