Rios (thumb) will be held out at least two games, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports. Rios has a jammed thumb, the same thumb that gave him trouble last season. Obviously, the Royals won't take any chances playing him in ultimately meaningless spring training games, and he'll be re-evaluated over the weekend.

Rios resumed swinging the bat without discomfort in January following offseason surgery on his thumb, the Topeka Capital-Journal reports. In addition to the thumb injury at the end of the year, an ankle injury may have limited his chances to steal bases, while toe and oblique injuries were also a factor for Rios last season. Moving into Kansas City, it's reasonable to think that his power rebound may be limited by his new home park, but a return to the 25-30 steal range is a possibility given the green-light tendencies of Royals manager Ned Yost.

Rios signed a one-year, $11 million deal with the Royals on Monday, Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports. The 33-year-old spent last season with the Rangers, hitting .280/.311/.398 with 54 RBI, four home runs and 17 steals in 492 at-bats. While his power has tailed off in recent years, he's been extremely consistent from an average perspective, hitting between .278 and .280 in each of the last four seasons. Rios will likely be penciled in as the Royals' starting right fielder, as he joins an outfield rotation featuring Alex Gordon, Jarrod Dyson and Lorenzo Cain.

Rios (thumb) has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2014 season, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports. Rios has been out of action since Sept. 4 due to complications involving a bruised thumb. Although he seemed to be nearing a return, there was little incentive to push him with the team far out of the playoff hunt. Instead, the Rangers will play it cautiously with their $68 million man, waiting until next spring to allow him to return to action. In the meantime, Dan Robertson and Jake Smolinski should continue to see extra reps during the final part of the season.

It's been close to a week now since Rios had the stitches removed from his thumb, but his status for a return to the Rangers' lineup remains up in the air. Rios (thumb) remains out of the lineup Friday against the Braves. The thumb infection has already cost Rios six starts, and he'll sit again Friday as Michael Choice mans right field for Texas. Rios was to be re-evaluated after having his sutures removed Friday, and if he checks out OK, he could be cleared for action in short order.
