My league has fumble recovery = 1 point for ALL players so that any loose ball recovered by anyone is worth a score however we really forgot to think about players who might recover there OWN fumble. We really don't want this to count as a positive. It is too drastic to add a -1 for fumble now that the season has started to cancel it out since that is a significant stat and would change many outcomes.
Is there any way to tell recovering someone else's fumble from recovering your own?
That is a possible fix that I have also considered, but not one I would be happy with. I don't want to penalize offensive players (including those that participate on special teams) by preventing them from gaining points for fumble recoveries. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
I don't see that this was ever officially answered by anyone from Fleaflicker and it is a situation my league is currently facing.
On the second-to-last play of the Dallas @ NYJ game, Romo was not prepared for a snap and the ball bounced off his chest (counted as a fumble; not lost). He was able to recover the ball and continue with the play. Problem being, Romo is being credited with a fumble recovery which is not what we intended.
Here is the relevant play-by-play from the NFL gamebook: nfl.com
This is the play in question:
"1-10-DAL 34
(:08) (Shotgun) 9-T.Romo FUMBLES (Aborted) at DAL 34, and recovers at DAL 34. 9-T.Romo pass incomplete short right to 88-D.Bryant."
As with the original poster, we do intend on awarding points to any player recovering a fumble... but don't believe players should be awarded for recovering their own fumbles, as was the case last night.
This scoring phenomenon has been confirmed as happening to other players this past weekend as well (Tavaris Jackson (QB/Sea) and Alex Smith (QB/SF).
I migrated our league over from MyFantasyLeague beginning this season and that site has the following scoring rule options:
Fumbles Lost (to Opponent)
Fumble Recoveries (from Opponent)
The above would eliminate this problem.
Can someone from Fleaflicker please explain how your scoring algorithms work?
We do go by the gamebook for mostly every single NFL stat purpose; the NFL GSIS crew is better at deciphering the fumble rules than anyone.
Technically, it is considered a fumble and recovery. It is at the commissioner's discretion whether they want to award the fumble/fumble recovery or not to Romo. For this purpose, we'll stick with the gamebook and leave it up to the commissioner to change their league.
We are working on a feature that would eliminate the (fumble, own recovery) problem like you alluded to above.
I agree, that technically the play is ruled an actual fumble. However, I believe it is important that commissioners be allowed the ability to differentiate between fumble recoveries from others versus recovering ones own fumble.
You mentioned working on a feature to allow this. Is there any estimate as to when it might become available?
*Just a lost fumble when recovered by the other team
*Yes, the RB will gain points for the fumble recovery
Here's an example. Cassel lost the snap last year for KC vs. Denver and Jamaal Charles recovered it. Cassel was not credited with the fumble lost, but Charles was given credit for the FR:
Yes.... instead of losing points for "fumble"... change it so that you only lose points for "fumble lost". This way you only lose points if your player's team loses possession.

Is your league a IDP or Team league?

IDP

Change to ALL players to just DL,DB and LB and that will come close to what you want

No estimate, but it's on the agenda to detect different types of fumbles

Can you answer me this:
Limited to the current scoring categories (fumbles lost and fumbles recovered), what constitutes a fumble lost? A fumble recovered?
Unfortunately, there hasn't been an example of this so far this season, but how would the following scenario be scored:
A QB fumbles the ball and his RB recovers the fumble.
* Does the QB lose points for a lost fumble, or is it only a lost fumble when it is recovered by an opposing player?
* Does the RB gain points for a fumble recovery?
Thanks,
- Dave (dmw71)

This absolutely helps clear up how fumbles will be scored using the existing rules --- thanks!
