If I open free agency now, will it be a free-for-all from the get go or start with waivers? If the default is free-for-all, can I set it to start with a waiver period?
During the offseason, waivers can run once a week. Ensure waivers are on at Edit Waiver Rules for your selected day and under Edit Transaction Rules->Lock Free Agents During Preseason is set to Yes.
In our league to get around this inconvenience we have to post in msg board trades that involve 2015 picks. Both parties have to accept and its binding.
When you initially select Edit Rosters>These are the complete rosters, they'll all turn to Adds unless you lock free agents in the preseason at League>Edit Transaction Rules>Lock Free Agents During Preseason and turn that to Yes and then turn your waivers on to run once a week -- then waivers will run once a week if you don't want them all as free agents on a first-come, first-serve basis.

For the current year in 2015, yes (no current way around that unfortunately); not future seasons after as those picks will be there.
