QB ATL (11)

Cousins (Achilles), who signed a four-year deal with Atlanta in March, is slated to be joined in the team's QB corps by Michael Penix, who was taken with the No. 8 overall pick in Thursday's NFL draft, Terrin Waack of the Falcons' official site reports.
EDGE Analysis
Despite the franchise's surprising decision to select Penix, Cousins, who is rebounding from an Achilles tear that he sustained Oct. 29, remains locked in as the Falcons' No. 1 QB for the foreseeable future. Regarding that topic, GM Terry Fontenot noted Thursday, "Kirk Cousins is our quarterback. We're very excited about Kirk, very excited about this team. (With) Michael Penix we're talking about the future. The draft is you look at the future and you look at big picture." In terms of his injury recovery, Cousins relayed last month that he's progressing well and is "optimistic that (he) can be full speed at practice before (the Falcons) break for the summer." In any case, barring any setbacks, Cousins -- who turns 36 in August -- is entrenched atop Atlanta's depth chart, with Penix providing the team with both an insurance policy for the veteran signal-caller, as well as a potential successor down the road.

By the time KC is set to retire, this kid will be in his final year of his rookie contract. The rest of ATL's draft looks to be of complete disarray and confusion.

Yeah I don’t get it. You sign K C in a win now move, then use a first on a QB? Why not take an elite tackle to protect your investment? They need some help on defense as well, but did that in day two picks

they could have traded down... grabbed the #3 WR opposite of London with petts in the middle and robinson toting the rock...

this was the worst top 10 pick since ryan leaf or perhaps 1 of the 4 straight WRs the lions picked in the top 10 a few years back.... my cowboys attempted to say oh yea? we gonna pick a small fast LBer at the end of the 3rd... just who is dumber? then there was the time (or 2) the Vikings let the clock expire and 2 teams jumped in front of them- that was top 10.. i think the got a DT as part f there shock and AWWE D-line.... the falcons pick at #8 is 1 of those really bad picks... ok if he wins 1 super bowl i will recant this post...

KC's contract is more or less a 2 year deal, that's when Penix's contract matters honestly. Not that I like the pick for them (Love Penix) or anything but it doesn't seem like they were thinking of Cousins as a retire in Atlanta guy or something.

The other 2 picks weren't bad although the 2nd rounder I question if there was a need to trade up to get him.

Penix is injury prone. 2 torn ACL's already in college.

ummmm... cousins contract os 4 years for $180 mil... $45 mil per year average....so yer gonna have $90 mil (2 years worth of salary) sitting on the bench as a backup or a #8 overall draft pick sitting on the bench...

Penix played every game for Washington the last 2 years so that helps with the injury concerns some but yeah there is that risk for sure.

I was just going off the guaranteed money which is basically 2 years, after that only 10 million is guaranteed after a deadline date. I see now the dead cap hit is pretty rough in year 3 but with a rookie qb contract to offset it I guess it could work out if needed.

Ultimately it feels like the Falcons just overacted to the QB situation last year and panic signed Cousins while planning to take a qb at 8. Seems crazy to me but I guess we'll see how it works out, as a Falcons fan if Dallas Turner hits double digit sacks this year though I'm gonna be really upset lol.
