Padres signed OF Mark Kotsay to a one-year extension through 2013. It's not clear how much he'll get, but it will likely be close to the $1.25 million he's making this season. Kotsay, 36, has batted a pedestrian .275/.333/.363 this season for San Diego, but the Padres value his bat off the bench and clubhouse presence.

Padres placed outfielder Mark Kotsay on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 13, with a tight lower back. Kotsay had to exit last Saturday's game with tightness in his lower back. San Diego kept expecting him to make it back, and avoid a DL stint, but with Kotsay's injury history that was probably wishful thinking. Kotsay is eligible to return a week from Sunday.

Mark Kotsay reported improvement with his lower back Sunday. Kotsay had to exit Saturday's game with tightness in his lower back, but although he won't play Sunday, it appears he'll avoid a DL stint. "He said last night that tomorrow [Sunday] will be big," Padres manager Bud Black said. "When I saw him (Sunday), he said that it felt good. We're going to do the best we can to stay away from him (Sunday)."

Mark Kotsay was removed from Saturday's game in the second inning with an apparent lower back injury. James Darnell took Kotsay's place in left field after the injury. There has been no word yet on the extent of the injury or whether or not he'll need time on the disabled list. The veteran outfielder can continue to be ignored in fantasy leagues.

Pinch-hitter Mark Kotsay hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday to lead the Padres to a 2-0 win over the Brewers. Kotsay has four RBI this season, but they've been huge, giving the Padres their only runs in 2-1 and 2-0 victories. The pinch-hit homer was his first since Aug. 9, 2002 in his first go-round with the Padres.

Mark Kotsay delivered a pinch-hit go-ahead two-run double in a 2-1 win over the Nationals on Thursday. Kotsay entered Thursday's action with zero RBI in 15 plate appearances this season, but he ripped one into the right-center field gap against Tyler Clippard in the bottom of the eighth to finally get on the board and put the Padres ahead. The 37-year-old was a surprisingly useful bench player for the Brewers last year, but he's unlikely to accrue enough playing time have any fantasy value this season.
