White Sox released INF Jeff Keppinger. Keppinger was designated for assignment by the Pale Hose on May 14 and passed through waivers without drawing a claim. He's been battling shoulder issues since last season and owns a weak .282/.329/.384 career slash line. The 34-year-old is now a free agent.

White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said that Jeff Keppinger was designated for assignment because the club didn't want to give him playing time over Conor Gillaspie, Marcus Semien and Gordon Beckham. Keppinger has dealt with shoulder issues since the beginning of the 2013 season, but Hahn says the veteran infielder is now healthy. He'll clear waivers due to the amount remaining on his contract, but Keppinger shouldn't have trouble latching on somewhere on a minor league deal.

White Sox activated INF Jeff Keppinger from the 15-day disabled list; designated him for assignment. Keppinger is making $4 million this season and is set to make $4.5 million in 2015, so the White Sox are eating a lot of money with this move. The veteran infielder has dealt with shoulder issues since the beginning of last season and the Pale Hose might be convinced that he was never going to be healthy enough again to contribute. They now have an open spot on their 40-man roster.

Jeff Keppinger (shoulder) went 2-for-4 in his first minor league rehab game with Double-A Birmingham on Friday. He's expected to need a lengthy rehab assignment before being cleared to return to the White Sox, after missing most of spring training. He's expected to serve in a super-utility role upon his return.

White Sox placed INF Jeff Keppinger on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 21, with right shoulder inflammation. Keppinger had arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder over the offseason and still feels pain when he throws. It's unclear when he'll be ready to return.

Jeff Keppinger (shoulder) conceded Friday that he'll begin the season on the disabled list. Keppinger doesn't have any structural damage in his right shoulder, but he's yet to throw past 90 feet and has lots of pain when throwing from shorter distances. It's not clear at this point what the next step for him is, but it doesn't sound like he'll be ready for game action anytime soon.

Jeff Keppinger's light throwing session on Tuesday went "OK." It wasn't the strongest endorsement for his ailing shoulder. The 33-year-old has been able to hit in camp, but is still having difficulty throwing the ball coming off arthroscopic shoulder surgery. Conor Gilaspie is likely to begin the season as the club's starting third baseman.
