Janssen was released by the Red Sox on Sunday, Mark Polishuk of MLBTradeRumors.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Janssen exercised his right to opt out of his minor league deal with Boston, and will look to join a major league roster somewhere else. He has not yet appeared in the majors this season, but played decently in the minors, posting a 2.87 ERA over 15.2 innings combined at the Low-A and Triple-A levels.

Janssen has moved up to Triple-A Pawtucket, Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 34-year-old major league veteran has appeared in five games for the PawSox, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks in 6.2 innings. Janssen could be part of the September callup as a bullpen depth option.

Janssen has allowed three runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out six in six innings for short-season Lowell.
EDGE Analysis
The plan for the 34-year-old veteran is to eventually move on to Triple-A Pawtucket, putting Janssen in a position to help the major league team in the second half of the season.

Janssen signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox on Wednesday, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports.
EDGE Analysis
Janssen will first report to Short-Season Lowell before joining the team's Triple-A Pawtucket affiliate. A former closer, Janssen last pitched in the majors in 2015 with the Nationals and was granted his release from the Padres after spring training this season. He'll likely serve in an organizational depth role to begin, but could be on the short list of potential call-ups should a Boston reliever suffer an injury.

Janssen was granted his release from the Padres on Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
A non-roster invitee to training camp, Janssen posted a 3.00 ERA and 3:0 K:BB over six innings of Cactus League work this spring. He posted sub-2.60 ERAs each year from 2011 to 2013, but the 34-year-old right declined in a major way the past two seasons, with last year's shoulder injury perhaps playing a role. Though he should latch on with another organization soon enough, Janssen probably won't find a big-league job before Opening Day.

Janssen signed a minor league deal with an invite to spring training Saturday with the Padres.
EDGE Analysis
Janssen had a season to forget in Washington during 2015. Shoulder issues impeded him out of the gate and he did not get much better from there, finishing with a 4.95 ERA in 40 innings while blowing all three of his save opportunities. He has a decent enough track record from before 2015 to think he makes the Padres' 25-man roster, so long as he is at 100 percent. If he gets there, he is definitely a candidate for some late inning duties.

Janssen's mutual option for 2016 was declined Monday and he will now become a free agent, James Wagner of the Washington Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
Janssen's lone season in Washington was a bumpy one, as he posted a 4.95 ERA and failed to record a save and he'll now be free to find a new home. The 34-year-old likely won't be able to land a closer role out of the gate, but with 90 saves to his name, the righty could work his way into higher leverage situations wherever he lands.

Janssen could see some save opportunities over the final week of the season following the suspension of Jonathan Papelbon.
EDGE Analysis
He hasn't been used in many high-leverage situations in the second half, but Janssen is the only reliever in the bullpen with recent closing experience. The Nats could elect to give younger arms like Felipe Rivero a look in the role as well, however.

Janssen blew his first save of the season Saturday, giving up four runs on four hits and two walks in a disastrous eighth inning. After three solid appearances following his activation from the DL, Janssen suddenly looked a lot more like the pitcher who lost the closer job in Toronto last year. The Nats are hoping he can be an effective set-up man for Drew Storen, but Janssen won't have a long leash in the role if he has many more implosions like Saturday's.

Janssen tossed two-thirds of an inning Sunday, striking out one, to pick up his first hold of the season. He worked in back-to-back games this weekend without any issues, so it looks like Janssen's shoulder is fine. Don't expect to see him on the hill Monday, but he should slot in as Drew Storen's main set-up man going forward.
