Guthrie announced his retirement from professional baseball Monday in an essay posted on The Players' Tribune.
EDGE Analysis
Guthrie's career ended on a sour note -- he gave up 10 runs while failing to escape the first inning in his lone appearance of the season with the Nationals on April 8 -- but it won't put too much of a damper on what was otherwise a solid 13-year run as a mid-rotation and back-end starter in the big leagues. Across stints with the Indians, Orioles, Rockies, Royals and Nationals, Guthrie accrued a 91-109 record and 4.42 ERA over 306 appearances (273 starts). The 38-year-old will likely be most fondly remembered for the three and a half seasons he spent in Kansas City, with whom he won a World Series in 2015.

Guthrie will most likely never pitch again in the majors, MASN's Mark Zuckerman reports.
EDGE Analysis
After allowing 10 runs and recording only two outs, Guthrie has come to terms that he will likely never put on a major-league uniform again. Guthrie is not officially retired, but at this point, it is just semantics.

Guthrie has elected to become a free agent, Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
Guthrie is no stranger to a shaky start here and there, but after getting lit up for 10 earned runs back on April 8, the team designated him for assignment. Rather than go to the minors, Guthrie will take his chances in free agency, though it'd be surprising if he was offered much more than a minor-league deal.

Guthrie was designated for assignment Sunday, Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports reports.
EDGE Analysis
Guthrie is coming off the worst outing of his 13-year career, as he allowed 10 earned runs while only recording two outs during Saturday's game against the Phillies. That disastrous start will more than likely mark the last major-league start of his career. Matt Albers has been selected to fill Guthrie's spot on the 40-man roster.

Guthrie was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday, Dan Kolko of MASN reports.
EDGE Analysis
With the Nationals' probable fifth starter, Joe Ross, not eligible for a call-up until April 12, Guthrie will start in his place for Saturday's game against the Phillies. He likely won't remain on the roster very long, so he doesn't carry much value at all. Michael Taylor was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding move.

Guthrie will start Saturday for the Nationals as expected, Dan Kolko of MASN reports.
EDGE Analysis
Guthrie remains on the Triple-A roster for now, but a roster move will be coming before Saturday's 7:05 PM start time. His spot on the roster is likely to be short-lived. The Nationals can't use Joe Ross for this start because he was optioned fewer than 10 days ago. Unless Guthrie really shuts down Philadelphia on Saturday, Ross will likely be the Nationals' long-term fifth starter.

Guthrie is the likely option to start for the Nationals on Saturday, Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
Manager Dusty Baker wouldn't confirm it Friday, but Guthrie's minors schedule seems to line up in favor of him getting the call. If this comes to pass, fantasy owners of Phillies hitters may be wise to use them.

Guthrie may be called up for a Saturday start in the Nationals' road series against the Phillies, Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports reports.
EDGE Analysis
Joe Ross isn't yet eligible for a call-up because he must stay optioned for 10 days and must wait until April 12. Guthrie, on the other hand, can come up on demand because he was optioned to the farm earlier. Most fantasy owners are likely better off using Phillies batters against Guthrie than actually clicking on the veteran right-hander for a start.

Guthrie could make a spot start for the Nationals on Sunday against the Phillies, Jorge Castillo of The Washington Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
Joe Ross was originally thought to be in line for that start, but after being optioned to Triple-A Syracuse the 23-year-old must remain in the minors for at least 10 days. If Guthrie does get the call his stay in the majors will likely be a brief one, but the Nats could also shuffle their pitching staff to keep the veteran around as a long reliever, something they don't currently have on their roster.

Guthrie will open the season with Triple-A Syracuse, Mark Zuckerman of MASNsports.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Guthrie signed with the Nationals as a non-roster invitee this offseason, and despite posting a 2.41 ERA over 18.2 innings, the 37-year-old will open the season in Triple-A Syracuse and serve as organization pitching depth.
