The move makes room for Jose Tabata to join the 40-man roster, with the Pirates having a much greater need in the outfield than in the infield. Sellers started rehabbing from an Achilles injury in late April, but he hasn't played in a minor league game in more than three weeks. Once healthy, he won't necessarily have a spot on the big-league roster.

One way or another he will serve as organizational depth for the rest of the season, and would likely need an injury or two to see significant playing time at the big league level.

The 28-year-old will be up to fill a utility infield role, but his opportunities will remain limited, and the lack of power or speed will make him unappealing in daily formats even if he does get an occasional start.
