Red Sox placed RHP Ryan Dempster on the restricted list. Dempster announced last week that he will not pitch this season due to neck issues and the desire to stay home with his family. The Red Sox put him on the restricted list in order to clear room on the 40-man roster for the addition of Chris Capuano.

Ryan Dempster said Sunday that neck issues which have become tougher to deal with factored into his decision not to pitch in 2014. Dempster has also cited wanting to spend more time with his family as a reason not to pitch this season. The 36-year-old hasn't ruled out the possibility of returning in 2015. The Red Sox will place Dempster on the restricted list, which means they won't have to pay him his $13.25 million salary.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Ryan Dempster will not pitch in 2014 due to "physical reasons and his desire to spend more time with his kids." "I don't feel like I am capable of performing to the ability and standard that I am accustomed to," Dempster said. "I feel it's in the best interest of both the club but most importantly myself to step away from playing baseball at this time. The time is right. I'm not saying retirement but I definitely won't be playing this season." The Red Sox will place Dempster on the restricted list, which means they won't have to pay him his $13.25 million salary in 2014. Dempster's decision cements Felix Doubront's status as the No. 5 starter.

Ryan Dempster will pitch out of the bullpen for the rest of the regular season. The Red Sox are preparing him for the postseason. Dempster hasn't pitch in relief since 2007 as a member of the Cubs, but the team feels he could be effective in a late-inning capacity.

Dempster has now allowed three runs total over his last two starts, but the right-hander has also walked nine in those 11 innings of work. He struck out five on Tuesday while allowing just three hits. His next start will come Sunday against the Blue Jays.

Ryan Dempster allowed one run over five innings in a no-decision against the Rays on Wednesday. Dempster's bottom line looked good, but he pitched around four hits and five walks to hold the Rays to just the one run. He was aided by seven strikeouts, and he was in line for his ninth win before the bullpen blew the lead. Instead, he remains 8-9 with a 4.70 ERA through 28 starts heading into his start against the Orioles next week.

Ryan Dempster or Felix Doubront will be removed from the rotation following Clay Buchholz's (shoulder) return. The speculation to this point is that Dempster is probably the most vulnerable, as he has the worst numbers and also has plenty of relief experience. Buchholz is rejoining the rotation on Tuesday.

Ryan Dempster allowed four runs over six innings in a win against the Tigers on Wednesday. Dempster wasn't stellar but he didn't need to be, as the Red Sox offense provided him with 20 runs in support. He was plenty good enough, though, allowing six hits and two walks while fanning seven. He'll look to make it three wins in a row Tuesday against the Rays in Tampa.

Ryan Dempster allowed three runs over 6 1/3 innings in Friday's win over the White Sox. His first start since his suspension for hitting Alex Rodriguez, Dempster held the White Sox to one run over the first six innings before running out of gas in the seventh. The veteran right-hander struck out five and walked three in the victory and now sits at 7-9 with a 4.75 ERA through 26 starts this season. His rotation spot could be in jeopardy when Clay Buchholz comes off the disabled list.

Ryan Dempster could be booted from the rotation when Clay Buchholz (shoulder) returns from the disabled list. The Red Sox haven't decided who will lose their rotation spot, but Dempster has struggled of late and is on the same schedule as Buchholz. The veteran right-hander will return from suspension to make a start on Friday against the White Sox.
