Aumont announced in June that he would retire from professional baseball, CBC News reports.
EDGE Analysis
Aumont attended spring training with the Blue Jays after agreeing to a minor-league deal over the winter, but he wasn't added to the 60-man roster pool for summer camp after electing to step away from baseball and take up farming as his next career. A first-round pick of the Phillies in 2007, the 31-year-old Aumont appeared in 46 career MLB games, logging a 6.80 ERA in 43.2 innings.

Aumont signed a minor-league deal with the Blue Jays on Monday which includes an invitation to big-league camp.
EDGE Analysis
The Canadian owns a 6.80 ERA and a 15.6 percent walk rate in 43.2 major-league innings, none of which have come since 2015. He's spent two of the last three years with the Ottawa Champions of the independent Canadian-American Association, posting a 2.65 ERA in 18 starts this past season.

Aumont has elected free agency following his designation for assignment over the weekend. Aumont was DFA'd on Saturday, and he'll opt to become a free agent rather than return to Triple-A. The 26-year-old has experienced major control issues this season (6.0 BB/9 at Triple-A), and he'll have prove he's capable of keeping the ball over the plate before a club gives him another look at the major league level.

Aumont was designated for assignment by the Phillies on Saturday. The Phillies were forced to turn to Aumont for a spot start Friday with Cole Hamels (hamstring) unavailable, and the 26-year-old proceeded to walk seven over four innings in a loss to St. Louis. Aumont will now be subjected to waivers, but considering his inability to find the strike zone with any consistency (6.0 BB/9 at Triple-A), it seems likely he will go unclaimed and end up serving out the year as organizational depth in the minors.

Aumont struggled mightily in his start Friday night, allowing six runs on five hits, walking seven and striking out three while lasting just four innings in a 12-4 loss to St. Louis. Aumont was once considered a blue-chip prospect, but has struggled with command throughout his pro career before seemingly getting things under control after moving into the rotation at Triple-A Lehigh Valley earlier this season. His control nightmare resurfaced with a vengeance in this one as he needed 104 pitches (just 56 for strikes) to cover four innings. With Chad Billingsley on a rehab assignment and Cole Hamels hoping to be back soon, this was probably a one start cameo. Expect him to return to Triple-A to try and get things back on track.

Aumont's contract was officially selected by the Philies on Friday. Aumont was already announced as Friday's starter, so it was just a matter of time before the official move was made. However, he's likely making more of a spot start than anything, with Chad Billingsley currently on a rehab assignment on his way back to the Phillies' rotation.

Aumont will be called up to make a spot start for the Phillies on Friday against the Cardinals, MLB.com's Todd Zolecki reports. He gets the start after Cole Hamels was scratched with a right hamstring strain. Aumont has a 2.35 ERA and 1.38 WHIP with 58 strikeouts in 65 innings at Triple-A this season. This will not be his first taste of the major leagues, but it will be his first start in the big leagues, as he has often been used as a reliever in his career. It is quite possible that Aumont will be sent right back to Triple-A following Friday's start, and he should be viewed as an incredibly risky start in daily leagues.

Aumont pitched seven scoreless innings Wednesday for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He struck out seven and walked none. Aumont was shifted to the starting rotation last month and is now 1-1 with a 1.29 ERA and a 16:5 K:BB ratio in 21 innings as a starter for the IronPigs. He has struggled with his command throughout his career, but seems to finally be making some strides there. If he continues to have success it is likely the Phillies will give him a look as a starter later this season. It would be a remarkable turnaround for a player that was designated for assignment this spring and went unclaimed by all other clubs.

Aumont was outrighted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Aumont was believed to be in the running for a long relief spot out of the bullpen this season, but didn't show enough in spring training to warrant a roster spot. He'll likely begin the season in Triple-A.

Aumont is expected to get a long look for a bullpen spot this spring because he is out of options, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Aumont is a former first-round pick that has failed to establish himself in the majors due his struggles commanding his pitches. He will likely be claimed by another club if he fails to earn a spot with the Phillies this spring.
