Coghlan signed a minor-league deal with the Cubs on Thursday, The Athletic's Patrick Mooney reports.
EDGE Analysis
He will be in extended spring training to start the season, but should soon join the Iowa Cubs. Coghlan was recently released by the Blue Jays and will have a hard time earning playing time at the big-league level this season.

Coghlan (wrist) was released by the Blue Jays on Tuesday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.
EDGE Analysis
Coghlan was designated for assignment over the weekend, and rather than accepting his assignment to the minors after clearing waivers, the 32-year-old elected to test free agency. He should be able to catch on elsewhere given his previous big-league experience, though he may need to get over the wrist injury that has kept him sidelined since June before he inks a deal.

Coghlan (wrist) was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on Saturday, Mike Wilner of Sportsnet 590 The Fan reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Blue Jays needed to clear room on the 40-man roster for Saturday's starter Chris Rowley, as well as backup catcher Mike Ohlman, so Coghlan was the resulting roster casualty. The 32-year-old hasn't played since June while nursing a left wrist contusion, and now appears bound for the minors when he returns from the DL, barring the possibility he isn't claimed off waivers. Coghlan, playing in his first year with Toronto, owns a lowly .200/.299/.267 slash line over just 75 at-bats this year.

Coghlan (wrist) went 1-for-3 with an RBI in his first rehab assignment Monday at High-A Dunedin, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran utility man has been on the shelf since mid-June after suffering a wrist contusion. News regarding the severity of his ailment has been suspiciously mum since, but he's back in action now. Coghlan slashed just .200/.299/.267 over 36 games prior to the injury, and whether he jumps back aboard the 25-man roster when fully healthy remains in question.

Coghlan was placed on the 10-day disabled list Friday with a left wrist contusion, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.
EDGE Analysis
It's unclear when this issue cropped up, but it may go to explain why he was absent from the past five contests. The severity is also unknown at this time, making a timetable for his return murky at best. Steve Pearce returned from his own DL stint in a corresponding move.

Coghlan is back in the lineup Wednesday, batting seventh and playing left field.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran outfielder had missed the past couple games with back spasms, but appears ready to return after some rest. Serving in a reserve utilityman role, Coghlan is slashing .231/.318/.333 over 39 at-bats this month and takes over for the resting Kevin Pillar on Wednesday.

Coghlan (back) is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Reds, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.
EDGE Analysis
Coghlan was scratched from Monday's lineup due to a bout of back spasms, but it seems like the ailment is still bugging him. Ezequiel Carrera will continue to man left field in his stead.

Manager John Gibbons said Coghlan's "back locked up on him during batting practice," but did not believe the injury was very serious, MLB.com's Gregor Chisholm reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 32-year-old has been splitting time with Ezequiel Carrera in left field while Steve Pearce remains sidelined with a calf injury. Coghlan is hitting .224/.312/.299 over 31 games this season. He's day-to-day for now, but the skipper's words send an encouraging message moving forward.

Coghlan was scratched from Monday's lineup against the Reds for an undisclosed reason, Mike Wilner of Sportsnet 590 The Fan reports.
EDGE Analysis
Ezequiel Carrera will replace him in left field, batting ninth. Coghlan's status will be updated once the Blue Jays provide a reason for his absence from the lineup.
