Schumaker has decided to retire from baseball.
EDGE Analysis
He had been in Padres camp on a minor league deal, but obviously the writing was on the wall that he was ticketed for the minors, and Schumaker decided to just retire instead.

Schumaker received an invite to the Padres' major league spring training Wednesday.
EDGE Analysis
The recently acquired Schumaker is one of two non-roster invitees in the Padres camp alongside prized prospect Hunter Renfroe. The veteran utility man appeared in 131 games with the Reds last season, slashing .242/.306/.336 to go with 51 strikeouts and 23 walks across 244 at-bats. His big league experience and versatility, as well as his left-handed bat, could give him a shot at landing a bench spot out of spring training.

The Padres signed Schumaker to a minor league contract Monday, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports.
EDGE Analysis
Schumaker spent last season serving in a situational role, which translated to a .242/.306/.336 slash line, one homer, and two stolen bases in 244 at-bats across 131 games. After turning 36 years old last week, he's clearly in the twilight of his career, but the opportunity afforded by the Padres could result in an outfield depth role at the major league level at some point in 2016.

Schumaker went 1-for-3 Saturday with his first home run, a three-run shot, and second stolen base of the season.
EDGE Analysis
He's done very little this season, slashing just .223/.291/.316 on the year, but Saturday's solid game might earn Schumaker some extra playing time down the stretch.

Schumaker came off the bench to loft a two-run double in Thursday's 11-0 rout of the Cardinals.
EDGE Analysis
Schumaker's pinch-hit extended Cincinnati's lead to 9-0, effectively putting the game out of reach for his former team. Though Schumaker has driven in three runs in his last four at-bats, his scarce playing time makes it difficult to use him in most formats.

Schumaker is starting in left field and batting seventh against the Brewers on Saturday.
EDGE Analysis
With Billy Hamilton on the DL and Marlon Byrd traded to the Giants, the Reds have more playing time in center and left field. Schumaker is hitting a paltry .217/.290/.289 on the season.

Schumaker is out of the lineup Sunday against the Cubs. Schumaker has started in left field three of the last four games, but he'll take a seat Sunday, as manager Bryan Price will look to limit the left-handed bats in his lineup against opposing starter Jon Lester. The outfielder has reached base safely in back-to-back games, but remains a less-than-intriguing fantasy option, slashing .227/.313/.330 on the season.

Schumaker is out of the lineup Monday against the Phillies. Schumaker made each of the last four starts in left field, likely indicating he will take over everyday duties for the most part until Marlon Byrd (wrist) returns from the disabled list. However, his lack of power and speed on the basepaths, combined with just a .236/.321/.361 batting line through 37 games this season doesn't make him an attractive fantasy option despite the additional playing time. Ivan De Jesus will start in left field in his place Monday, batting sixth for the Reds.

Schumaker will make his fourth straight start in left field Sunday against the Padres. With Marlon Byrd (wrist) landing on the DL this past Wednesday, Schumaker has been able to claim a regular role for the Reds. Though he doesn't have many viable challengers for at-bats, Schumaker's limited power, lack of stolen-base prowess, and .221/.312/.338 batting line on the season make him more ideal for a utility role than an everyday starting gig.

Schumaker will start in left field and bat leadoff Sunday against the Braves, C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Schumaker will get the start in favor of the slumping Billy Hamilton, and will man the leadoff role for the second time this season. He'll provide manager Brian Price with another left-handed bat in the lineup, and is 2-for-4 in his career against Sunday's starter, Julio Teheran.
