Indians recalled RHP Vinnie Pestano from Triple-A Columbus. Pestano, one of baseball's most underrated relievers over the last two years, has dealt with an elbow issue, diminished velocity, and prolonged struggles in 2013. He registered a 4.05 ERA and 1.53 ERA through 34 appearances before the Indians demoted him on July 31.

Indians manager Terry Francona removed Pestano from high-leverage situations, but it appears that Cleveland would prefer to do without him in low-leverage situations at the moment as well.

Pestano managed the rare feat of allowing three hits and a walk while throwing a scoreless inning, as the Royals' baserunning miscues aided the cause. With Chris Perez working his way back Pestano's days closing games could be numbered, but Perez is no sure thing to be effective upon returning. The situation is worth monitoring in the days following Perez's activation.
