Duffey (0-1) gave up two runs on three hits while striking out one over one inning in a 4-3 loss Saturday against the Mariners.

The Twins did not name a closer to start the season and Duffey was the first reliever given the opportunity to record a save. Despite his poor showing in his 2022 debut, the 31-year-old should continue to receive late-game opportunities as he has been one of the best bullpen arms for Minnesota over the past three years.

Duffey agreed to a one-year, $3.8 million contract with the Twins on Tuesday to avoid arbitration, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports.

As luck would have it, it did, and Duffey answered the call. He'll likely return to his setup role once the Twins feel that Colome is ready to go again.

Twins manager Rocco Baldelli was also handed a one-game suspension, which he will serve in the second half of Minnesota's doubleheader with the Angels on Thursday. Expect Duffey's appeal to be heard in the next few days before an announcement is made regarding whether the three-game ban is upheld or reduced.

Duffey had a slow start to the season with a 4.50 ERA and five walks in his first four innings. He has been striking out batters with six strikeouts in six innings overall. Duffey has always had good control, so the early walks are out of character. He doesn't appear to be in the mix to finish games as he's been used as early as the fourth and fifth innings in games, but he'll still feature in high-leverage situations if the walks don't become a trend.

Duffey threw a scoreless inning with a strikeout in Tuesday's spring training win over Baltimore. He's given up three runs in 2.2 innings with three strikeouts this spring.

EDGE Analysis

Duffey will factor in the late innings again for the Twins, likely setting up both Taylor Rogers and Alex Colome. However, he could get the final outs of a game occasionally as well. Duffey had a 1.88 ERA with an excellent 34.1% strikeout rate and an exemplary 7.3% walk rate last season. He should offer value in leagues counting holds (12 last year).
