Chatwood signed a minor-league contract with the Giants on Saturday, Mitch Bannon of SI.com reports.

Chatwood was DFA'd by the Blue Jays at the end of July, and he was released after he went unclaimed on waivers. The right-hander posted a 5.46 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in 28 innings across 30 relief appearances for Toronto this year and will be an option to join the Giants' bullpen if injuries occur.

The veteran right-hander has been on the injured list since early July with a neck strain, but he's been removed from the 40-man roster to make room for Jose Berrios, who was acquired Friday from the Twins. Chatwood made five rehab appearances with Triple-A Buffalo over the past couple weeks, so he should be available in the near future should any other teams be interested on the waiver wire.

Chatwood (neck) made his fourth rehab appearance at Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday, tossing a scoreless sixth inning for the affiliate in its 3-2 win over Syracuse. He scattered a hit and walked two in the 23-pitch outing.

Though Chatwood has allowed only one run over 3.2 innings during the rehab assignment, the control issues he battled prior to landing on the injured list July 2 with a neck strain haven't gone away. He's now issued six walks over his four appearances at Buffalo, and he pumped in only 11 of his 23 pitches for strikes Sunday. Until Chatwood shows that he can consistently find the strike zone at Triple-A, the Blue Jays may be loath to expedite his return from the IL.

The righty allowed a pair of runs on two hits and two walks while pitching just 0.2 innings Thursday against Seattle. After stringing together eight consecutive scoreless appearances, Chatwood has now yielded five runs in his last inning of work and has a 5.46 ERA on the season. It's unclear how long the righty will be sidelined with the neck strain. Anthony Castro and Nick Allgeyer were recalled to fill the hole in the bullpen left by Chatwood's absence.

Chatwood allowed no hits and a walk in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save against the Orioles on Sunday.

EDGE Analysis

Chatwood failed to record a strikeout in Sunday's appearance, but he preserved Toronto's three-run lead to earn his first save of 2021. The right-hander has worked mainly as a setup man to begin the season, as he's recorded nine holds with a 4.32 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 25 innings.

Chatwood (0-2) lost Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader, allowing two runs on one hit and five walks in 1.1 innings of in a 6-5 defeat to Cleveland.

EDGE Analysis

Chatwood relieved starter Steven Matz in the sixth and allowed two inherited runners to score before walking four straight batters in the seventh to take the loss. He's now walked multiple batters in three straight appearances, two of them losses, and has 12 walks in 14 May innings.

Chatwood (0-1) was tagged with the loss Sunday against the Rays after giving up four runs on two hits and two walks over two-thirds of an inning.

EDGE Analysis

Chatwood had been dominant of late and had recorded seven straight scoreless appearances before melting down Sunday, as he had major issues to find the strike zone and only tossed nine of his 22 pitches for strikes. He still owns a 2.55 ERA on the season, but there's no question he'd like to put this outing behind him as soon as possible.

Chatwood struck out four over 1.2 perfect innings of relief to record his third hold of the season in Tuesday's win over the Nationals.

EDGE Analysis

All of the right-hander's holds have come in his last three appearances, as he's taken on a high-leverage role since returning from an IL stint due to triceps soreness. Chatwood has a 0.00 ERA and 9:2 K:BB through 6.1 innings to begin the season, but as yet there's no indication he could move into the saves mix for manager Charlie Montoyo.
