Despite getting the day off Sunday, Plouffe should continue to see a steady diet of at-bats while he performs capably at the plate. He's posted a .342 on-base percentage over 76 plate appearances in May.

Plouffe went 3-for-4 with an RBI double, another two-bagger and two runs in Thursday's 8-3 win over the Red Sox.

However, the fact that he's still striking out at a 29.5 percent clip is helping keep his OBP at an unsightly .277.

Ryan Healy, who can also play third base, is younger with more upside and could star seeing more starts at the hot corner.

If Plouffe can produce a reasonable facsimile of his 2015 campaign in Minnesota -- one that saw him smack 22 homers and 86 RBI -- the A's will likely be very satisfied with their one-year investment in 30-year-old.
