When Cahill is effective he is able to generate groundballs, and that's exactly what he did against the Twins on Saturday. Eleven of his 18 outs came via groundout, helping him limit Minnesota to only one extra-base hit across his six innings of work. Cahill has alternated solid and horrific outings to begin the season, which has left him with a 7.11 ERA and 19:5 K:BB across four starts. He'll take the mound next Saturday against St. Louis.

Cahill (0-2) allowed six earned runs on eight hits and walked one while striking out five over four innings of work in a loss to the Brewers on Saturday.

EDGE Analysis

The righty struggled greatly as threw 56 of his 87 pitches for strikes and allowed a multitude of hard contact hits. If the Pirates keep Cahill in the rotation, his next chance to take the rubber will be on Friday against the Twins.

Cahill (0-1) took the loss Tuesday as the Pirates were routed 14-1 by the Reds, surrendering seven runs on nine hits over four innings. He struck out four.

The veteran right-hander got taken deep twice by Tyler Naquin in a brutal Pirates debut. Cahill tossed 49 of 73 pitches for strikes before getting the hook and got scored upon in three of his four frames. He'll try to shake off this performance in his next outing, set for Monday at home against the Padres.

Cahill struck out one batter without allowing a hit or walk in two innings against Baltimore on Monday, DK Pittsburgh Sports reports.

EDGE Analysis

He threw 12 of 17 pitches for strikes, facing the minimum of six batters. Manager Derek Shelton has already stated that the veteran will break camp with the team, though his role has yet to be determined. "We're going to continue to stretch Cahill out like he's intending to start, then we'll kind of see how far he is and work from there," Shelton said. Cahill could take on more responsibility if Steven Brault's injury forces the lefty to miss time.

Cahill agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million major-league deal with the Pirates on Thursday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.

Cahill worked both in relief and as a starter with the Giants in 2020 and managed a respectable 3.24 ERA and 1.20 WHIP across 25 innings. He struggled with his control as he surrendered 14 free passes, but also managed to punch out 31 hitters. Cahill should have the chance to earn a spot in the Pirates' rotation, though will still need to compete with Tyler Anderson, JT Brubaker, Cody Ponce and Will Crowe for the role.

Cahill (1-1) earned the win Wednesday with two scoreless innings versus the Mariners. He allowed two hits and a walk and struck out four.

Cahill entered the contest in relief of Caleb Baragar, who walked all three batters he faced. Cahill then ended that threat and was solid over the remainder of his relief outing. Cahill could work either as a spot starter or in a multi-inning relief role during the rest of the regular season.
