Romero, as expected, was optioned to Triple-A on Friday, the Seattle Times reports. Romero made the roster out of spring training last year, but that was more by default than anything. After the Mariners re-tooled their outfield this offseason, Romero had little chance of landing a roster spot. He needs to improve his plate discipline (four walks in 190 PA last season with the Mariners). He perhaps could get called up if injuries hit.

Without an everyday gig to keep up the pace, he may find difficulty producing once again, but owners in very deep formats could reap the benefits of his recent success at the plate.

Romero saw time in right field and at first base in Sunday's game, indicating that the Mariners are still considering him as a potential bench player to open the season.
