Mattheus was reassigned to the Angels' minor league camp on Saturday night. He was a longshot to make the big club, and fell short even with the team taking 12 pitchers to begin the season.

Mattheus has signed a minor league deal with the Angels, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports. Mattheus is still paying for his brutally bad 2013, which featured a 6.37 ERA and cancelled out his strong 2012 (2.85 ERA). He'll get a chance to make his case in spring training, but it's hard to see him not starting 2015 in Triple-A, where he spent most of 2014 until the Nationals outrighted him.

The Nationals outrighted Mattheus off their 40-man roster Thursday, James Wagner of the Washington Post reports. Mattheus, with 145 big league games under his belt, elected to become a free agent rather than accept his Triple-A assignment. He appeared in just seven big league games last season, but his experience should help him land a job elsewhere.

Mattheus was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday. Aside from a handful appearances with the major league club early in the season and two with the team's rookie-level affiliate, Mattheus spent the year at Syracuse, posting a 5.80 ERA and 1.46 WHIP over 40.1 innings. He enjoyed a good deal of success with the Nationals in 2011-12 but figures to be relegated to mop-up duty upon his return.
