Soriano and the Cubs are close to reaching an agreement, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Soriano would likely sign a minor league deal, but he could be an option for the Chicago bullpen within the next few weeks. Although he has plenty of experience as a closer, Soriano may need to prove that he's still capable of filling a late-inning role. Chicago would be one of the better landing sports for him to eventually enter the mix for saves, as the Cubs have a clear-cut closer at the moment. Hector Rondon filled that role for most of the season, but Pedro Strop and Jason Motte have both picked up saves in the last few days. Manager Joe Maddon said he doesn't want to commit to fixed roles at the moment.

The Marlins have expressed interest in signing Soriano, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports. With closer Steve Cishek struggling, the Marlins are exploring other alternatives. Manager Mike Redmond hinted that Cishek will be removed from the ninth-inning role, leaving A.J. Ramos and Bryan Morris as the leading candidates to pick up saves. Even if he's signed in the coming days, Soriano will likely need some time to get big-league ready. Additionally, he wouldn't necessarily serve as the Marlins' closer, following a solid but unspectacular 2014 campaign as the Nationals' closer.

Soriano's agent, Scott Boras, says calls about his client's services are increasing, the Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports. Soriano says he wants to play this season and has reportedly been throwing and working out. However, he'll likely need several weeks to get back into game shape. A MLB team with a need for a bullpen arm will likely sign him at some point, but Boras is likely holding out for a significant deal.

Soriano is talking with multiple teams but signing with a team isn't imminent, the Jon Morosi of FoxSports.com reports. Soriano says he wants to play this season and has reportedly been throwing and working out. He'll likely miss the first month or two of the season even if he signs quickly as he'd need time to get up to speed in the minors.

Minnesota has inquired about watching Soriano throw, ESPN 1500 am Twin Cities reports. Minnesota has reportedly been in the market for a veteran arm to add to the bullpen, but Soriano would appear to be too expensive for a rebuilding team. However, the Twins did unexpectedly sign Kendrys Morales last year as a free agent after Opening Day, so perhaps they could sign Soriano and trade him later if needed. Soriano remains unsigned as a free agent but has been throwing and is likely conducting workouts for teams.

Soriano has been throwing in the Dominican Republic and will begin working out at the Boras Sport Training Institute in Miami Lakes, Florida this week, CBSSports.com reports. The report implies that Soriano's moving of his training to the U.S. indicates he'll sign with a team shortly. It sounds like Soriano plans to play again this year and he could still find a prominent role in a major league bullpen. However, it's getting late enough in spring training that he may need to stay in extended spring training to be ready.

The Nationals officially declined to pick up the 2015 option on Soriano's contract, the Washington Post reports. He amassed 75 saves in two seasons for Washington, but after losing the closer job to Drew Storen down the stretch it was all but a foregone conclusion that he'd be cut loose this offseason. Depending on where he lands, Soriano could find himself right back in the closer mix with another club.

The Nationals will likely decline Soriano's option for next season, NBC Sports reports. Soriano struggled in the second half, losing the closer role to Drew Storen. The option was worth $14 million, so it's not a surprising move by the team. Despite his late struggles, Soriano did finish the season with a 3.19 ERA and 32 saves, so he could still command some interest on the open market.

Soriano has made the Nationals' postseason roster, Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post reports. Despite being dropped from the closer's role in early September and seeing minimal usage in the season's final month, Soriano will be one of a handful of pitchers manager Matt Williams turns to in middle relief. Even with his September swoon, Soriano finished with respectable numbers on the season, posting a 3.19 ERA and 59 strikeouts over 62 innings.

Soriano picked up the save Sunday against Miami despite allowing an earned run. Because Drew Storen pitched both Friday and Saturday, Soriano was given a chance to close things out Sunday. The 34-year-old was shaky in August (4.38 ERA) and has been even worse in September, allowing seven earned runs over 7.1 innings.
