Rockies owner Dick Monfort said the team has yet to decide whether to pick up Rafael Betancourt's $4.25 million option in 2014. Betancourt has a 3.16 ERA and 15 saves for the Rockies, but has struggled to stay healthy and is currently on the 15-day disabled list. With Rex Brothers proving capable of taking over the closer role, he could be viewed as expendable this offseason. The 38-year-old right-hander could also be a candidate for an August trade, but will need to be placed on revocable waivers.

Rockies placed RHP Rafael Betancourt on the 15-day disabled list with appendicitis. The disabled list stint is retroactive to July 15 and Betancourt should be ready to return when first eligible. Rex Brothers is going to serve as the Rockies' closer in Betancourt's absence and is a must-own in standard formats for the 10-or-so days that he is in the ninth-inning role. Mitchell Boggs was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move to provide middle relief depth.

Rafael Betancourt earned the win Saturday as the Rockies defeated the Giants by a score of 2-1. Betancourt pitched a perfect top of the ninth inning and Michael Cuddyer delivered a walkoff RBI single in the bottom half of that frame. The appearance was Betancourt's first since he was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Friday evening. He is the Colorado closer, and Rex Brothers is back to setup duty.

Rockies activated RHP Rafael Betancourt from the 15-day disabled list. Betancourt has been sidelined all month with a right groin strain, but he's feeling much better after getting some rest. He's expected to regain his closer job immediately, which means that Rex Brothers will slide back into a set-up role.

Rafael Betancourt (groin) will be activated from the disabled list on Friday. Betancourt revealed the news himself following a successful live batting practice session Tuesday. "I'm ready to go. I feel so much better than I did before I went on the DL," Betancourt said. "Before, when I came to the park, I was thinking about it all the time. Now it's totally different. I'm ready to help this team win and do my job." Rex Brothers has fared well in the closer role with Betancourt out, but the veteran will get his job back.

Rafael Betancourt (groin) threw a 35-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday and reported feeling fine. Betancourt will face live hitters on Friday and could then be cleared for a minor league rehab assignment. The veteran right-hander will be back in the Rockies' bullpen by the end of this month if everything continues to go smoothly. Rex Brothers is filling in at closer and doing a fine job.
