The Angels designated Kohn for assignment Tuesday, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports. During his time in the Angels' bullpen this season, Kohn posted a 3.04 ERA and 1.31 WHIP over 23.2 innings, numbers which are more than serviceable from a middle reliever. He wasn't particularly good at Triple-A Salt Lake, however, with a 4.76 ERA in 33 appearances, and the team has decided to give his 40-man roster spot to one of its younger, more promising players.

Michael Kohn's Tommy John surgery on Thursday went smoothly. His estimated time of recovery is 12-18 months. The 25-year-old right-hander posted a 7.30 ERA over 14 appearances last season.

Michael Kohn will have Tommy John surgery Thursday. It's a tough blow for the 25-year-old right-hander, who had a shot at a bullpen spot this spring before experiencing elbow and forearm problems in late March. He will be sidelined for the entire 2012 campaign.
