Tanaka is currently listed as the Yankees' probable starter for Sunday's season finale against Texas but the club may elect to pitch him behind an opener instead. Regardless of how he is used, Tanaka will be on a limited pitch count, though it is unclear how long he will be allowed to remain in the game. The Yankees have little at stake in their remaining two games, so Tanaka's appearance is being treated as a warmup before the start of the postseason.

Tanaka (11-8) picked up the win against the Angels on Thursday, giving up one earned run on four hits over seven innings, striking out six and walking none as the Yankees prevailed 9-1.

EDGE Analysis

Tanaka had given up eight runs over nine innings in his last two starts coming into the contest, but he bounced back with a sharp effort against the Angels and cruised to his 11th win of the season. It was good to see from the right-hander, who has had an erratic campaign overall, with his 4.47 ERA across 179 innings representing a substantially higher number than his career mark of 3.77.

Tanaka will make his next start Thursday against the Angels, Mike Mazzeo of Yahoo Sports reports.

EDGE Analysis

Tanaka was in line to start Friday against the Blue Jays, but fellow starter J.A. Happ needs one more day to recover from his biceps injury, so manager Aaron Boone decided Tanaka and Happ would swap spots in the rotation. Tanaka's last start came Friday, so he will still have the benefit of an extra day of rest between outings.

Tanaka allowed four runs on eight hits with zero walks and six strikeouts across five innings during a no-decision against the Blue Jays on Friday.

Although he avoided a loss, Tanaka continued his second half of the year struggle Friday night. While he is 5-3 since the All-Star break, Tanaka also owns a 5.78 ERA in the last 12 starts, which has increased his ERA nearly a full run over the last two months. He is 10-8 with a 4.60 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 141 strikeouts in 172 innings this season. Tanaka will get another crack at the Blue Jays in his next outing Friday at home.

Tanaka did not factor into the decision against Boston on Sunday, hurling four innings and giving up four runs on eight hits while striking out two. He did not walk a batter.

Tanaka gave up a pair of singles but held the Red Sox scoreless through the first two innings. The third and fourth frames did not go as smoothly, however, as he allowed three hits and two runs in each inning. Tanaka was then replaced at the start of the fifth after tossing 80 pitches -- his lowest pitch count since he threw 79 against Toronto on July 14. The 30-year-old will carry a 4.53 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 135:39 K:BB through 167 innings into his next start, on the road against the Blue Jays on Friday.

Tanaka (10-8) took the loss Monday as the Yankees were blanked 7-0 by the Rangers, giving up two runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings while striking out five.

The right-hander didn't pitch badly, tossing 68 of 103 pitches for strikes en route to his fourth quality start in his last five trips to the mound, but the Yankees' offense went uncharacteristically silent. Tanaka will carry a 4.42 ERA and 133:39 K:BB through 163 innings into his next outing Sunday in Boston.

Tanaka (10-7) got the win against the Mariners on Tuesday, giving up no runs on three hits over seven strong innings, striking out seven and walking one as the Yankees cruised to a 7-0 victory.

Tanaka has been on an erratic run of form lately, but he was able to settle down in this one and shut down the Mariners to easily pick up his 10th win of the season. His recent inconsistency still leaves him with a 4.47 ERA, but Tanaka's other numbers look solid, as he's got a 1.22 WHIP and 128:37 K:BB across 157 innings. He'll look to build on this outing in his next start, which will pit him against the Rangers at home on Monday.

Tanaka (9-7) pitched six innings and took the loss against Oakland on Thursday, giving up five runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out five.

EDGE Analysis

Tanaka entered the game having won his last two starts but couldn't keep the streak going Thursday as he was knocked around early by Oakland. He needed 33 pitches to get through the first inning, giving up three runs on a trio of hits and a pair of walks. He then breezed through a seven-pitch second inning but found himself in trouble again in the third, allowing three straight hits to begin the frame and surrendering two more runs. Although he held the Athletics scoreless on a pair of hits the rest of the way, the early damage proved too much for the Yankees' offense to overcome. Tanaka will try to get back into the win column when he hits the road to face Seattle on Tuesday in his next scheduled start.

Tanaka allowed two runs on four hits with no walks and two strikeouts across 6.1 innings while taking a victory against the Indians on Friday.

The right-hander has been inconsistent during the second half, and his strikeouts are down since the end of June, but he's been very good in his last two outings, both of which he won. Tanaka has yielded two runs in his last 14.1 innings (1.26 ERA), which has lowered his ERA nearly half a run. Hopefully this continues, but keep in mind, because of a few really poor outings, Tanaka owns a 6.92 ERA and only 32 strikeouts in 52 innings over his last 10 starts. Overall, he has a 4.56 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 116 strikeouts in 144 innings this season. Tanaka will face the Athletics on the road in his next start Thursday.
