Jimenez is 6-for-34 (.176) with three RBI and three runs scored through 15 games this spring. Jimenez is struggling to make contact this spring, but his ability to play both first base and third base keeps him in contention for a spot on the Brewers' Opening Day roster.

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said that Jimenez is an option to back up at both corner-infield spots, and potentially see time at second base. When asked about the team's depth options Monday, Roenicke praised Jimenez's defense at third base. Upon being asked if third base is his only viable position, Roenicke indicated that first base -- and even the keystone -- are possibilities as well. Scooter Gennett is expected to receive an opportunity to face left-handed pitching this season, but if he struggles, Jimenez may emerge to fill the platoon partner role that Rickie Weeks held last season. Jimenez will turn 27 in spring training, and he was never been able to carve out a steady role with the Angels despite intriguing numbers at Triple-A Salt Lake. His minor league numbers have been similar at most of his stops, culminating in a .299/.335/.509 mark over eight seasons following a 2014 campaign that included 21 home runs and a 12-for-16 mark as a basestealer.

Jimenez was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports. Jimenez will be rewarded for his great season at Salt Lake -- he hit .286/.321/.505 with 21 homers and 12 steals in 117 games -- with a spot on the team's expanded September roster. The 26-year-old went 4-for-25 during a brief stint with the big club in May, and while he may see a few starts here and there at third base, he'll mostly provide depth at the corner infield spots.

Angels optioned INFs Luis Jimenez, Tommy Field and Efren Navarro, LHP Buddy Boshers and RHP Josh Wall to Triple-A Salt Lake. Jimenez was competing for a bench job, but the Angels were probably looking for a little more defensive versatility. Boshers' chances at cracking the roster were hurt with Sean Burnett (elbow) looking likely to be ready for Opening Day.
