Maxwell was officially added to the Giants' major league roster Tuesday, Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area reports. This move was effectively made Sunday when both Juan Perez and Gary Brown were sent to the minors, but Maxwell formally took his place on the active roster after batting .316/.361/.526 with two homers and 11 RBI in his first 21 spring games. Look for Maxwell to serve on the short end of a platoon in right field with Gregor Blanco and see opportunities off the bench until Hunter Pence returns from his forearm injury.

With Juan Perez and Gary Brown being sent down Sunday, Maxwell appears to have won the battle for the fourth outfield spot on the Opening Day roster. Joining the Giants as a non-roster invitee this spring, Maxwell has slashed .302/.351/.509 with two homers, 10 RBI, and two stolen bases in 53 at-bats. He doesn't exhibit great plate discipline (13:4 K:BB ratio). but the club likes his power and speed combination from the right side of the plate. He will likely platoon with Gregor Blanco in right field and provide pop off the bench until Hunter Pence (forearm) returns.

Maxwell entered Wednesday's spring training game against the Rockies as a pinch-hitter, going 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored. Maxwell, a non-roster invitee, has been playing well for the Giants this spring, slashing .277/.333/.447 through 47 at-bats. With Hunter Pence expected to start the year on the disabled list, Maxwell is one of many options the Giants are considering to fill his void in right field. He offers the closest combination of power and speed to Hunter Pence of all of the replacement options, but his 32.1 K% is a glaring flaw. Maxwell would need to put together a strong push down the stretch to earn a spot on the 25-man roster.

Maxwell signed a minor league contract with the Giants, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports. Maxwell appeared in 199 games at the major league level from 2012-13 but made just 20 appearances with the Royals last season, and instead spent the majority of the year at Triple-A Omaha. A .224/.311/.417 career hitter at the highest level, he seems unlikely to work into a regular role at any point in 2015, but Maxwell at least provides the Giants with quality organizational depth.

Maxwell has elected free agency, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports. Maxwell, who turns 31 next month, appeared in just 20 games with the major league team this season, going 6-for-40 with one extra-base hit in 45 plate appearances. He did hit .285/.352/.464 in 56 games with Triple-A Omaha, but his speed is all but gone, so a minor league deal with a spring training invite seems like a best-case scenario.

Royals purchased the contract of OF Justin Maxwell from Triple-A Omaha. He'll replace the injured Nori Aoki on the active roster. Maxwell was removed from the 40-man roster back in May after he hit just .138/.219/.172 over his first 32 plate appearances this season. He could get some at-bats against left-handers with Aoki sidelined.
