Vogelsong gave up two runs over three innings in Saturday's spring training loss to Boston. He has a 7.27 ERA with a 5:5 K:BB in 8.2 innings this spring. He reached just 89 mph with his fastball during Saturday's outing, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
Vogelsong is in the mix for the fifth starter competition that's become more wide open with Trevor May headed for Tommy John surgery. He hasn't shown much this spring, although he says his velocity will increase later in spring as he builds his strength. It seems unlikely he'll win a spot on the 25-man roster, but it's possible the Twins could decide to begin the season with Vogelsong as the fifth starter and serve in a swingman role with off days until younger players are ready in the minors.
