Alvarez (elbow) threw a bullpen session Friday, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Alvarez is on the 60-day injured list while recovering from left elbow inflammation and won't be eligible to return until early September. That should give him plenty of time to build up gradually in bullpen sessions before beginning a rehab assignment.
