The Yankees announced Sunday that Rodriguez would play his final MLB game Aug. 12 against the Rays before joining the team in an advisory role through the 2017 season, MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Yankees manager Joe Girardi admitted last week that Rodriguez likely wouldn't be utilized much over the final two weeks of the season while the team looked to make room for younger options, prompting the franchise to reassess the 41-year-old's role while he remained under contract through the remainder of the 2017 campaign. Rodriguez, who is owed $20 million in 2017, will be unconditionally released after the Aug. 12 game, but he'll still stick around the organization as an instructor and special advisor while receiving his full payment. The 14-time All-Star has made just seven appearances since July 23, but with his retirement on the horizon, expect Girardi to give Rodriguez at least a few more starts over the next five days to close out his career. Once Rodriguez is out of the picture, the Yankees will continue to give most of the at-bats at DH to Gary Sanchez.
