Ortiz was designated for assignment by the Cubs on Sunday, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports. Ortiz was off to a decent start with Triple-A Iowa this season to the tune of a 3.38 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over 10.2 innings, but the Cubs determined that Anthony Varvaro -- who was claimed off waivers from the Red Sox -- was more deserving of a spot on the 40-man roster. The 24-year-old left-hander doesn't figure to attract much interest on the opening market, so it's possible he could remain with the organization if he passes through waivers unclaimed.
