Nix was designated for assignment on Monday. With Clint Barmes (groin) returning from the DL on Monday, Nix was DFA'd to clear room on the roster. The veteran has appeared in 16 games for the Pirates after signing earlier this month and is hitting just .111 with four strikeouts in 36 at-bats.
